I would like to know what your favorite full-house loads are for the .45-70. I will be reloading for a Ruger No. 1 so shooting full house loads will not be a problem. Any loads provided will be worked up by me from at least 10% below max. Thanks!

As much AA2200 as will fit under an RCBS 405gr. cast bullet lit with a Winchester mag primer. Runs just under 1900 fps in my 1895SS, and in extremely accurate.(until the flinch starts!)

Two off my favorite loads for the Ruger #1 are a 300 grain Hornady jhp loaded with 63.0 grains of reloader #7 for slighty over 2400 fps.Another favorite is a hardcast 405 grain bullet with 49 grains of reloader #7 powder also will work with the Remington 405 jsp bullet. These loads are loaded in Winchester brass trimmed to 2.105 with CCI primers.

Thanks 45/70 marlin. Turns out I am going to be reloading for the Marlin guide gun in .45-70. Can you recommend some loads for that firearm? Thanks. Dave

I havent tried very many different loads in my 45-70 but 55 grains of imr 4895 and a 350 barnes X gets 1940 f.p.s. in my NEF handi rifle. You may be able to put more powder in the case but I cant because I have to seat the bullets pretty deep to stay off the rifling of the handi rifle.

My best HEAVY LOAD for my Ruger No. 1 45/70 is 60 grains of Alliant RE7 behind a Barnes Original .458 Spitzer, Rem. cases, Fed 210 primers. This load produces 2270 feet per second at 15' from the muzzle, and all the recoil one would care for, +! eek: The only scopes I found which will stand this recoil are Leupolds. In my rifle, this load gives 3-shot groups averaging 1.5" @ 100 meters (110 yards). It might shoot better, but that's the best I can do!! I tried the 300 barnes Original spitzer also, and got 2490 with 63 grains of RE7, but accuracy was not as good. The IV for this load was 2490 feet per second. For a reduced load, I use a Lyman .457122 hollow point cast bullet and 60 grains of 3031. This gives 2100FPS, and I insert an inverted Hornady gas check over the powder, as this is a plain-base bullet. All are compressed loads. The Ruger No. 1 45/70 is a real killer!! Good luck!!
