Im loading 150 grain sierra spt pro hunters, and a max load of varget, bullets seated .050" from the rifleing and getting really good accuracy with that load, but switching to imr 4320 because im running out of varget snd there seems to be lots of availability of 4320, and it seems to be one of the recomended powders for the 300sav.

I've been loading 39.5 grs of H-4895 for 30 years with a 165gr. I tend to use more than enough gun

Kennedy, Thanks for the query; actively observing this thread as I'm loading for my Pal's Savage 99 in 300 Savage. Right now we're using 180 gr. Hornady R.N.s with 37.5 grs. of VVN-140 crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die in the cannelure and 40.0 grs. of VVN-140 with 150 Hornady GMX's also crimped into the forward relief groove. Always looking for a better mousetrap .... Cheers, Number 10

I shoot 165 gr with bal-c2 only after my supply of bal-c ran out. My Dad started using bal-c after WW2 and has work well counting for many deer. I don't push mine 99 hard only 2400fps but it kills deer very well

What works well in my Savage 99 Featherweight [1958-ish] is 40 gr IMR 4320 pushing Hornady 150 gr Interlocks. Chrony-ed at about 2550 fps. About 1 MOA when I shoot any good.

Well this is probably not some loads most of you would be shooting but I have a couple cast loads that I love to shoot in my Sav. 99. Although I have decent supply of 300 Sav. brass both new and with a couple of loads fired in it I make all my general purpose brass for once fired 308 Win. or LC 7.62 x 51mm NATO brass it's a pretty easy conversion and a power assist shaft on my Lyman trimmer makes quick work of cutting the cases to proper length. The two loads I like both use 16.0 grs. of Alliant 2400 with either the Lee 150 gr. RNFP or the Lee .312" 160 gr. RN tumble lube bullet both gas checked and sized to .311" Buy the way when I use the LC brass when has slightly less case capacity I can gain about 75 fps. extra velocity with and identical load in the reformed 308 Win. brass. Here are a couple of 5 shot groups I can shoot regularly when I do my part.

Do be careful with the Savage 99. Extraction gets sticky pretty quickly if you go hot, even though the load would be no problem in a bolt action. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

So far with mine the 150 Spire point load right out of the Hornady book works fine with sub MOA grouping. The sweet spot seems to be 42 gr IMR 4064 at 2700 fps and an OACL 2.60". I'm trying some 180 gr Partitions this week and will report back. Mark MARK H. 39 gr 4064, 180 NPPP with OACL 3.60 prints, Fed 210M primers and Rem cases consistently shoots about 1 MOA at 2380 fps. I'm happy with this and about any game at moderate range is in trouble. I'm hunting with my 1954 savage 99, using 150 Nosler Solid Base bullets and a moderate charge of 3031. It shoots right at MOA, or a smidge more. I got the load from Ken Waters Pet Loads; he cautions against hot loads after he had a case rupture and split a stock. It chrono'ed at 2650 for him. Its taken a few deer and hogs here. BTW, was talking to a local judge who said his 99 in 300 savage has taken a boxcar full of mule deer and elk in the 50's and 60's. But that was when ships were wood and men were iron. Good luck and good shooting. I have old manual that they used the 300 sav as test gun on reloads...if someone can put the info on here I will send it too you I am not good at this.. favorite powder is #4064..also 4895/3031/4023..The model 99 are not touchy with different powders. I use 150 gr bullets from speer ..You do not get a lot of reloads out of shell do to headspace like 2 reloads if you full length resize.. we use rem shells, cci primers ...I use #3031 because it works fine in my 250-3000 model 99 do not want to buy a lot of different powders...

Havn't loaded for the old 300 Sav. in years, but if one used harsh language about that caliber or the Savage 99 in my home state of Texas he would be gilflurted and string haultered and dumped in bad water! Just a great old deer rifle and its brought down more than its share of elk, I had an uncle that got teased by all about that magnum big ole gun that wasted all manor of elk meat. I never heard or know of him shooting more than once, that's all it took. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Yes that's exactly how fast a NP 165gr is going at the muzzle. I tend to use more than enough gun

Good 300 Savage loads from Ken Waters' Pet Loads: 40 grains of IMR 4895, or 40 grains of IMR 4064, or 42 grains of WW-748 with a 150 grain bullet. 44 grains of WW-760 with a 180 grain bullet. My load is 41 grains of WW-748 with a 180 grain bullet. No problems in several Savage 99s, but start at 39 grains.

A worthwhile trick with a 99 is if your hand is sensitive and your mind is functional, is you will feel the lever drop oh so little but it does as the loads get to warm, some Win 94s will do likewise..Never have I seen this in print but it be a truism Also beware of max loads for bolt guns being suggested, they shooting them in a 99 Savage, My practice over the years is load 2 gr.s below book max in a 99 Savage, or be prepared to see some cases come in half..I love the 99 but I won't abuse one..My all time best load is 48 grs of WW-748, its fast and trouble free and reaches max without the pressure of most powders.
