Davide Pedersoli is said to be very technically competent. Isn't there something on the website ?

Which Pedersoli gun? What weight bullet? Cast or jacketed? Holy Black or smokeless powder? Smokeless, What powders do you have on hand? Minor details, but will give posters a hint where to start/what to ignore in giving you a starting place to develop "the" load for your gun. Don't limit your challenges . . . Louis, If you read the above I was asking for a load. Don't come on being a smart mass. Powder, bullets and load data is what I was asking for. If you have nothing good to say, don't say it.

TCLouis asked the right questions to help you. Now what rifle are you using? Do you want to load BP or Smokeless, jacketed or cast bullet?

Basically a Win 71 replica action. Some may call it an 1886. Nice rifle! I believe you are looking to handload. Another alternative is Buffalo Bore 420 grain hard cast. I think Garret makes some stout loads and Underwood (less expensive) as well. I shoot them in a Marlin guide gun. The PED. is made with modern steel. I bet it is up to the task. It will be fun rifle to experiment with. EZ

Pedersoli makes several rifles in .45-70 including rolling block and Sharps single shots as well as the Mod 71. The type of rifle will affect the type of load selected.

They also made an exposed hammer double that I liked even though I sold it. I know the bullet I used was the 350 grain Hornady Round Nose, just cannot remember the powder or grains. I thought it was a good load and was reasonably accurate. My problem is I just can't stay hooked up with a 45/70. I have had 4 and they were all good guns, but I just can't stay hooked up with them. Even the rocks don't last forever.

My load for lever action 86/71's is: Bullet: 400 grain lead flat nose. I used to cast RCBS 405 grain gas check bullets. These average about 415 grains when all lubed and checked using Linotype. I've used the green RCBS and LBT blue lubes and saw no accuracy or leading difference (no leading in bore). Gas checks do their job. I use hornady checks. I think RCBS brand checks are or were made by hornady. If you choose to use a plain base lead bullet in this load, I would recommend sizing to .459" and have the bullets made of a reasonably hard alloy like Lyman #2 or hardball. If you decide to substitute a different 400 grain LFN bullet, make sure that the amount of lead in the shank area is about the same. Most commercially available 400 grain lead flat nose bullets are similar enough, that they should work just fine. This is a pretty low pressure load, and plain base lead bullets produce a little less pressure than gas checked. Powder: 52 grains of H4895 Primer: Winchester Large Rifle Case: Winchester. I've used starline,as well with no difference in accuracy. I bet any case brand would work fine. I got 1.5"-ish groups at 100 yards from an extra light model 86 with an aperture sight. Cantaloupes at 300 yards would need to find cover. Velocity is estimated to be about 1750 from the 22" barrel, and pressure should be a little less than 25k cup. This load is a little too hot for trapdoor's, but should be safe for any of Pedersoli's reproduction falling block single shot or 1886/71 repro's. However, you should cross reference my load with the hodgdon manual for safety's sake. This is a stout midrange load, that is not for the faint of heart. You could load that bullet all the way up to 2100fps, out of MY gun, using RL 7, H4198, and H335, but it HURTS, and is completely unnecessary. BTW, Lyman #2 or heat treated wheel weight alloy would hold together better than Linotype. Lino is brittle. I'd deer hunt with it, but maybe not big bull elk. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
