Would like to hear some reports on how this powder is performing in the 30-30. I have bought some of this and will put the lid on the IMR 3031 for now, so I can try it out.
In the mean time, does anyone else have any experience with this powder and caliber?

Thanks

David

It has been several years since I loaded BLC(2) in the .30-30. My notes show only using it with 150 grain bullets and while accuracy was listed as excellent, I do recall experiencing a rather spectacular muzzle flash when fired from a 10 inch Contender barrel. [Big Grin]

I did use the powder in a .308 carbine for a while but went to 3031 to reduce muzzle flash there too. Besides, I'd used up the pound so I had to change. I did not try it with 170 grain fodder but judging from the Hodgdon's manual, it should perform as well or better than 3031 with the heavier bullets.

My Hodgdon manual lists 37.0 and 36.0 grains as maximum loads for the 150 and 170 Sierra bullets with staring loads at 33.0 and 32.5 grains respectivly.

C.A. Plater,
Yes this powder does have some excellent numbers in the manual. That is what drew me to this powder. Can't wait to see how those numbers translate into performance.
Maybe with the 24" barrel I will be tailoring this load for the muzzle flash won't be an issue.

Thanks

David,

I have used a number of powders in the .30-30 with BLC-2 being one of them. Using currently manufactured BLC-2 with 170 gr. bullets, I got good accuracy but did not notice any muzzle flash from a 20" barrel.

In my experience, this was mostly a problem with older surplus lots of both BLC-2 and H335 especially with 110 gr. bullets in the .30-30.

Lighter bullets and shorter barrels could well produce some muzzle flash with currently produced BLC-2 as C.A. Plater has pointed out.

Good luck,

I don't recall the flash in my 94 carbine with 150's, just with the Contender and the .308 load being noticable at midday. If I had some BC(2) I would load up some 170 silver tips for this years deer season but the closest I have is WW748 which will have to do. Your 24 inch barrel should do just fine.

Good hunting,
Courtney

I have used both BLC2 and WW748 with good results, here are my Marlin 336 30-30 loads with BLC2. All groups are 4 shots at 100yds with a 2x7 Redfield.
130gr Speer Flatnose 37.5gr BLC2 1 7/8 inch group
170gr Speer Flatnose 36.0gr BLC2 1 1/8 inch group
170gr Nosler Partition 36.0gr BLC2 1 1/4 inch group
This particular rifle is capable of MOA groups so these are not flukes.
