I built a 416 RUM on an old 7mm Mag M700 action. 26" Lilja barrel. I'm getting between 2600 and 2700 fps with 400 gr. bullets using Re17, W760, H4350, or Ramshot Big Game with great accuracy and long case life. Recently, I got 2575 fps with 450 gr. Woodleigh bullets (~6700 ft#) using Re19 or PP-4000-MP and 2625 fps with 430 gr. NF SS using Re17 (~6500 ft#).

This is both a close-range and long-range gun. I can get 2850 fps with 350 TTSX (BC=.444) for long-range or close-range work.

Cases are easy to make by simply sizing up a std 375 RUM case.

You might consider this round, if you want a "one gun for everything Africa," and you don't want to buy the larger action needed for a 416 Weatherby or 416 Rigby. You can also rebarrel your current belted magnum gun for the 416 RUM with minor magazine modifications, and then return to your origin belted mag after switching barrels. The magazine will still work for the belted mag. For my 416 RUM, I also have a 338 RUM barrel, which I switch out as needed for elk, etc.

The 416 RUM (UltraCAT) has 120 grs H20 case capacity compared to 102 grs H2O for the 416 Ruger - that is, ~20% more. The 416 RUM approaches the case capacity of the 416 Rigby, which is at 127 grs H20.

It sounds like it is very similar to comparing the 375 H&H vs the 375 Weatherby.

Frank, the 416 RUM is a bigger jump. The 375 Weatherby (375 Ackley Improved) is ~10% jump over the 375 H&H in case capacity. The 416 RUM can push a 400 gr bullet easily to over 2600 fps, whereas the 416 Ruger will max around 2400 fps. The 416 RUM is in the same league as the 416 Dakota, 416 Rigby, or 416 Weatherby. AIU
