The following loads were tested by the Vienna Governement proof house and were released according to § 15, Abs. 2 of the Austrian proof law. All tests were performed with a 65 cm (25.6 inches) test barrel. Of course in the my 60 cm barrel (23.6 inches) of my Lott the muzzle velocity is a few meter/sec lower. Bullet: 500 grains Woodleigh FMJ Primer: Federal 215 Powder: 88, 0 grains Kemira N540 Avg. V (0): 693 meter/sec (2272 fps) Avg. Pressure: 4107 bar Bullet: 500 grains Hornady Soft nose Primer: Federal 215 Powder: 89, 0 grains Kemira N540 Avg. V (0): 703 meter/sec (2305 fps) Avg. Pressure: 4006 bar Bullet: 400 grains Woodleigh PP Primer: Federal 215 Powder: 92, 0 grains Kemira N540 Avg. V (0): 750 meter/sec (2459 fps) Avg. Pressure: 3638 bar Max allowable pressure of the .458 Lott is 4300 bar. Kemira N540 seems to temperature stable. I never had any problems with these loads due to African temperatures.

I'm not impressed with the Lott. I can get 2200 fps with 500 grain Barnes banded solids in an ordinary .458WM with a 22" barrel using AA2230. I have not measured the pressure but there suire aren't any signs of pressure. Indy Life is short. Hunt hard.

I tried 540 in my lott.I think it gave me compressed loads and large groups.

Does anybody have load data for the Lott using h4895? My 458WM shoots very well. I just purchased a 458 Lott and would like to try that powder first. I have several boxes of Hornady 500gr bullets---both solid and soft.

465H&H, Thanks for the post. I saw your info on the Big Bore site and have loaded some test loads for this weekend. I started just above my 458WM loads and went up 1gr at a time to chronograph and see what velocity and accuracy do. With 83.5gr of AA2520, the 500gr Hornady solids are running right at 2300fps and shoot into 1" at 100yds. I thnk the recoil might be less with the h4895. We'll see.

Hodgdon reload data site provides some compressed H4895 loads for .458 Win. Mag. As I'm sure you're well aware, the whole "concept" behind the Lott is to provide more case capacity and move away from compressed loads -- owing to performance/ignition issues in the African heat. I have a Ruger No.1 in Win. Mag. and keep thinking about having it fitted for the longer brass. It'd be sooooooooo, easy! But then the gun is stamped "Win. Mag." and nicely fitted. I feel a bit like "old school" since Ruger no longer offers this chambering. My experience with any gun mods has been that the prospective buyer always moans, "Jeez! I wish you hadn't done that!"

Yeh, they do. A few of them actually mean it. Most of the others, I've found, are just like me. I say that just as an opening ploy to get the negotiation of the price started on the way down to what I want to pay...or the least I'll HAVE to pay....... My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
