This is my current pronghorn antelope load... -Winchester nickle coated brass (only stuff I could find locally) -Federal 215 primers -56.0 grs. Re-19 powder -Sierra 120 gr. Pro-Hunter bullets, seated to the maximum length the throat/magazine length will allow. Will place its first three shots from a cold, wet barrel (patched out, of course) into one ragged hole at 100 yards. This from my commercial FN Mauser with Timney trigger, very light laminated & checkered walnut/walnut stock, M-70-type 3-position safety, and "fly-weight" 25" Hart barrel. The 120 gr. Pro-Hunter bullet is my preference for this work as the antelope I am using it on are very thin-skinned and seldom weigh over 120 pounds live-weight, even for a "monster". Groups open up to 3/4" or a tiny bit more when charge is increased from 56.0 to either 56.5 or 57.0 grains of powder. The 57.0 grain load also expands about 2 out of every 50 primer pockets to point of uselessness on first firing, so is clearly too hot in my rifle. Don't have chrono data yet, but will have after tomorrow at the range, and will modify this post by adding that data after I return. AC | ||
