I noticed that in many reloading manuals and internet sources for 30-06 loading there are more different loads for 180 gr. bullets than for other weights. Does this implicate that for a 30-06 180 gr. bullets are the better choice?

I think it's just because it is the middle of the road for the 30-06. A guy going Elk hunting might load the 180 and a guy going deer hunting might load the 180. A guy going Elk hunting probably wouldn't load the 165 gr but might load the 200 gr. Conversely the deer hunter probably wouldn't load the 200 gr (although I do for everything) but has a good chance of loading the 165 gr. So the 180 is in the middle and gets all traffic. ____________________________________ There are those who would misteach us that to stick in a rut is consistency - and a virtue, and that to climb out of the rut is inconsistency - and a vice. - Mark Twain | Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. ___________________________________

The 180 grain bullet is the best one-weight-does-everything bullet for the 30-06, so it's probably the most-loaded bullet in that cartridge. Moreover, a very large number of different powders usually give good to superb results with the 180 grain bullet in the 30-06. "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

I agree with the rest of the gang .The 180gr has to be the most popular bullet for the 30-06. It is considered to be the best simply because you can hunt everything from coyote to grizzly with it...THEY SAY. Personaly I like a 150gr.Rn for deer size down. For elk and such I like a !80 or 200. For Grizzly I like a 375 h&h with a 235gr.or 250gr.failsafe. Sorry, but I wouldnt be shooting a griz with an '06. Not to say it cant be done ..I just would'nt. My 3006 gets 180's or heavyer. 308 gets 165's or 180's, my 6.5x55 or 270 gets 160's and less. 286 gr bullets needed goes to my 9.3

emphasis mine. NO. What it implies is that the 180 is more common and more popular, not necessarily better. For bears, I load 180s, for deer, the 168tsx. May try the 150TSX soon. Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

If yer gonna shoot the "big stuff" or the "dangerous stuff" you need to go for the "big bore." Middling bullet weight on a 45-70 is 350 gr. For what it's worth. I have a 30-06. Decent caliber for most any game on the North American continent -- 'cept probably the really big, nasty bears. Bullet weight on .308" dia. runs 65 gr to about 220 gr. The really light stuff gets sort of squirrly.
