The .300 H&H is the least fussy cartridge I know of. I have had five or six and they were all very accurate.

I hunted 13 mornings and evenings, I was into Elk a few times but actually getting eyes on a bull is at times easier said than done. With the end of the rut drawing near I knew locating a bull would become more difficult with each passing day. I'd been going into an area where I had heard bugling before light every morning. By Sunday morning of the 13th I felt like I had their travel route pretty well figured out and there was a 50/50 chance to be on the correct travel route from water to the bedding area as they seemed to be using one or the other each day. At 1st light I had eyes on a bull and was about to squeeze off when the bull turned his rear end towards me and I didn't get that shot and I eventually ended up spooking that one off trying to get a better angle on him. I decided not to pursue that bull further as I'd already been on a few goose chases where the bull always seems to stay a step or two ahead. I figured if you don't have the drop on them it's very difficult to get it back. I hung out for a few minutes deciding what I was going to do when I heard this bull bugle down in some thick dark timber. I had my bugle and cow call with me so I figured I would see if I could bugle the bull in to at least get eyes on him. I hit the bugle a time or two and the bull responded and kept getting closer. The bull came closer but still I couldn't see the bull. I switched over to the cow call and did that a couple of times. After the cow call the bull came the rest of the way up out the thick with a couple of cows with him. The bull presented me with perfectly broad side shot at around 75dys. After 13 days of mornings and evenings it was the best opportunity I had. I made the decision to shoot very quickly as opportunity can go away so fast. The shot was off hand as going for a rest or tree for a brace simply was not possible. I put the 180gr partition right thru the boiler room on this bull and at 75yds and my Leica set on 2.5x I could see it rocked him a little and then ripple thru the hide was easily seen. Of course, the cows took off and this bull tried but was quickly fading away and that was it, he went down and never got back up. This is the 4th time I've hunted Elk but the 1st time I've been successful on Elk. Black Hills Elk is a resident only draw for the tag and most draw anywhere from 10 to 25 preference points. I drew the tag on my 20th try. The ice for me on Elk is broken and I look forward to doing it again, but most likely in a different state as odds are not in my favor of getting another Black Hills tag while I'm still young enough to do it.
