Have any of you tried the Hornady 40 grain V-Max in the 223? The rifle that I'm shooting has a 1 in 14" twist. I'm looking for an accurate fast load. At present I'm shooting Hart 52 grain HP BR bullets over AA2230 powder and a Federal 205M. I would like to hear what you have found to be the best powder for this light bullet in the 223. The barrel on my rifle is 24" again with a 1 in 14" twist.

I shoot them in my Ruger #1 (1 in 12 twist) over 28 grains of W 748 or 22 grains of IMR 4198. Both very accurate loads.

Thanks Pete. I'll give it a try. What primers are you shooting and what kind of velocity are you getting out of that 40 grainer?

Using Remington 7 1/2 primers. Don't have chronograph, so I don't know the velocity.

My 26 inch heavy barrel T/C Encore averages .506 for 5 shot groups with the Hornady 40 gr V-Max over 27 gr. of H335 and a Win small rifle primer. It averages 3795 fps.
I was about ready to sell this barrel until I tried the 40 gr. bullets on my last outing with it. Not sure about the twist, lately I'm having more bouts with the CRS Syndrome(Can't Remember Shit Syndrome)

Thanks Steve, I've never been fond of the brake open rifle, but favor the bolt gun. At present I have two 22e rifles. One is a Cooper with a 1 in 14" twist and the other is a Custome Remington 700 that was built for me by R. W. Hart. Both rifles are very accurate. The Hart will shoot in the mid .100s", and the Cooper is not far behind. This just an experiment to see what a high velocity 40-grain load will do in the Cooper. I know that the 40-grain pill in light on our NYS ground hogs, but it should be dinamic on crows and pegions. With the information that I have gather here and in the books. I have decided to give AA2230 powder a try starting at 26.5grains and working up in 1/2 grain incroments till the pressure signs start to show, or the accuracy goes to hell. I'm hoping to hit the 3700 fps zone or higher.

Never tryed the 40gr. but have run the 35gr. through my H-bar's(1-8,1-7,twist),and,super 14 contender barrel with great accuracy out to 100 yds.,They tend to drop like a brick after that.I've found that I.M.R 4198 is the go to powder for under 50 grn bullets,,it's like pixie dust for tightening groups with light .224 bullets,,Good luck!!Clay

40 gr. Hornady work great in my contender .223, 3 shot group about an inch at 200 yds. off of my bipods. I have some 40 gr. Ballistic tip Ultramax remanufactured stuff that I haven't shot yet but the price was right, also I would like to try some 37 gr. stuff that I saw in Cabelas.

sendero, i''d advise you to try Benchmark powder behind your 40 gr bullet, nosler manual #5 top load is 28.0 grains also their most accurate load tested for that powder mid load was 27.0 grains start load was 26.0 grains,24 inch ligla barrel,w-w brass 1-12 twist, remington 7.5 small rifle primer, a friend of mine loaded some for this girlfriends 223 rem classic, they shot very good out of her rifle i had my limited edition/ mountain eagle 223 there at the same time and tried his reload in my rifle, they shot great we cronographed his load through my krieger cut/ rifeled barrel and they were doing very high 3800 plus speed my barrel is 26 inch inpressive speed to say the least these 40 grainer were nosler basistic-tips but they can be switched with hornadys V-maxs no problem, their super accurate also. benchmark offers the highest speeds in all my cross-referenceing for the bullet weight your asking about (40) grains... hope this helps you out jjmp

I like H-335 and W-748 with both 40 and 50 gr bullets - Ballistic Tips and V-Maxs shoot the same at 100 yards in my rifles.
