I found some interesting data in this 1966 circa manual. I find it interesting the 4198 data is so good. 220 gr. Speer 4320 53.0 gr. = 2550fps 4895 52.0 = 2561 fps 4064 51.0 = 2561 fps 3031 49.0 = 2551 fps 4198 42.0 = 2511 fps 250 gr. Speer 4320 49.0 = 2403 fps 4895 49.0 = 2397 fps 4064 48.0 = 2440 fps 3031 46.0 = 2440 fps 4198 39.0 = 2322 fps These are max listed loads from an old manual. They used CCI 200 primers and the test rifle was a model 70 with a 22 inch barrel. Work up! cases were of course Winchester. I am pretty sure Hodgen didn't make a 4198 back in 1966 so it had to be IMR. I'd still start 6 grains low with this powder. Thanks. I just picked up a 358 and need to start my load development. What is your current favorite?

My 358 is a BLR made in 1976. The test rifle was a long action model 70 which most likely allowed the testers at Speer to seat the bullets out farther than I can. My present favorites are 47.0 grains of 3031 under the 200 grain Remington RN corelokt and 42.0 grains of the same powder under the 250 grain Speer both loads using the CCI250 primer. As soon as I get some empty brass I am going to work up a load using 4320 but I doubt I will be able to reach the above max listed load in my rifle. IMR's 3031 is good with 200's and 4198 with 180's in the .358 Win. These days I am using RL 10 with both bullets. Its a tiny bit faster than 3031.

Actually 4198 looks good with all weights. It will take up less case capacity in rifles with 2.8 length magazines. Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.

My best load in my old 1976 BLR was 51.5 grains of WW748 and the Speer 250-grain spitzer. This load came from Ken Waters, and was 3 grains UNDER his MAX load. Yet this was a 1 MOA (three shots) load in that 20" barrel @ 2450 FPS MV. Wish there had been a .358" Nosler Partition 250-grainer back then-maybe I would have kept the gun. As it was in those days, bullets were on the soft side in .358" size..... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

A word of caution regarding compressed W-748 loads...I planned on using 52 gr of W-748 under a 225 gr Partition in my MRC 1999 bolt action in South Africa. The load shot very well, hit about 2540 FPS and showed no signs of pressure at all. The problem was that the load was so compressed and the powder spheres so fine that they backed the primers out enough to cause misfires. Sometimes the primer would work with a second firing pin strike and sometimes it wouldn't. I got tired of not knowing if I would get a click or a bang and ended up using the PH's .375 for subsequent trophies.

Si, Si....RL 10 is much the best with 220/225s.

Likewise ... the 4198 equivalent in Australia is AR2207. This is my favourite powder in the 358Win and I've taken it beyond 39gr behind a 250gr projectile. Oddly the powder responds differently in the 375/08 where its too fast. Cheers... Con

My 358 is a yugo 24/47 with a 24"douglas #3. The intermediate action allows me to seat 250gr woodleighs to the base of the case neck. 47gr of IMR4064, Rem brass, Fed 210 primers gives me 2400fps and 1" groups at 100yds. Steve
