250 gr nosler partion bullet with 53grains of IMR 4064. one hole at 50 yards with peep sights, small clover leaf at one hundred yards again with peep sights. Rifle is a model 700 remington. I am going to try 250 gr hornady next to see how they work, hopefully just as good because they are less than half the price of the nosler. This is my first try with heavier jacketed bullets the rifle is mostly a cast bullet shooter.

I have a Rem 7600 in 35 Whel. and I use to use IMR 4064 but switched too IMR 4320 @ 56.0 with Speer 250 Spitzers and Fed 210 GM primers and Fed Prem brass. I squezzed a little more vel from 4320 and accuracy was the same. 2600 FPS load

JerryW,

I really think the 35 Whelen is a great cartridge and have played a lot with the many load bullet combos. Sounds like you have found a winner load with IMR 4064. Any idea what your velocity is?

My favorite to date is Reloader 15 and 225 grain Barnes X. I get to 2625 fps with this load. I took this combo to Namibia last year and shot gembok at 125 yards and zebra at 325 yards(along with a couple smaller antelopes). The 325 yard shot was pushing things a bit. But we found the zebra dead after it ran about 400 yards.

I have not shot the 250 grain Hornadys but have tested the 250 grain Speers and they shoot well and hold together very well also. I read an article once(I believe Finn Aagard had written) where an fellow from Alaska had used the 250 grain Speer for everything in his 35 Whelen and was quite pleased. Again with Reloader 15, I get to 2525 fps with top loads.

My most accurate load to date is 225 grain Ballistic Tips with IMR 4320. The velocity was 2710 fps. The bullet is good for deer, caribou and varmits but will not hold together well enough for the big bears, IMO.

Other bullets I have tried are the 225 Nosler Partitions and I would have taken them to Namibia, but the Barnes X shot better in my rifle. Also tried the Sierra 225 Gamekings, they are good for target practise only, break up a lot more then the Ballistic Tips.

That person from Alaska was I, I have used the 250 grain Speer Spitzer in my 350 mag long before the 35 Whelen with excellent results on Moose and bear, I had my 7600 pump in 30-06 rebarrel by Rem in 35 whel. about 3 yrs ago just because i like those 760/7600 pumps. I have noticed as long as the Vel is 2500 to 2600 Fps these bullets perform excellent on heavy game, before these I use to use the 250 grain nosler part in the 350 RM but when I switched to the Speer SPT I found no difference in effects on mooose, excellent bullet and a lot cheaper. The vel I had with IMR 4064 were in the 2540 FPS range, but excellent accuracy also. Reloader 15 I have not tried but all indications it should be excellent.
