I offered to load for a friend. This is normally no big deal but he managed to show up with some 165 gr. Barnes "X" bullets that he'd like loaded in a .30/06 Sprg. Remington 700 BDL. I have absolutely no expereince with these projectiles, period. On initial inspection they appear to be quite long, therefore my query in regard to case volume & C.O.A.L.? Anyone have an expereince with this bullet or established loads for .30/06 Sprg.? Yes, I've looked at the Barnes website but have no other available info/reference on this specific bullet other than what Quick Load has "suggested". Thanks Cheers, Number 10

57 gr 4350 with a 165 - if the gn doesn't shoot that load well - get rid of the gun

Gerry, I noticed your posts about reloading 30.06 ammo in this and other posts and your preference for 165 gr. bullets. I am looking for a good recipe for 165 gr. Hornady SST bullets over VVN160 for use in a Blaser 95 12-70/30.06 Lapua advised me in a personal mail to use 160 for good huntingloads and 150 for accuracy loads but could not provide the data. Did you develop anything for this combination.

reindeer, I currently only load one 180 gr. bullet in the .30/06 Sprg. That is the 180 gr. Hornady Round Nose with 55.0 grs. of H-4350. I have to admit I have a real penchant for 165 grainers in this cartridge. I've tried just about everything made in that weight and after re-inventing the Wheel about a gazillion times keep coming back to the 165 gr. Nosler Partition. It just seems to work real well for me, both accurate & cleanly dispatches game. Funny, because as I look at my records there are two bullets that I could never get to shoot worth a Sh*t for me in (my) and some of my friend's .30/06's. You guessed it, one was the Hornady 165 gr. SST and the other a since discontinued Speer bullet. Perhaps I just grabbed the wrong four boxes of bullets during a shopping spree in the States! If I had to rate the bullets I've used and had the best results with in the 165 grain weight they would be: 1. Nosler Partition 2. Sierra Game King HPBT 3. CT (168 gr. not 165 gr.) Ballistic Silvertip 4. Sierra Game King Boat Tail Spitzer 5. Nosler Ballistic Tip Don't let the #5 fool you though, I only put it there due to it's relatively quick exapansion on the typical game I normally shoot. If there was one bullet I'd select without hestitation to test the accuracy of a .30/06 Sprg. it would be the 165 gr, Nosler Ballistic Tip. If a rifle will plunk those from the get-go it is normally a keeper. Some of the powders that have resulted in good accurate loads with these bullets are H/IMR-4350, H/IMR 4831, VV N-160 & VV N-560. I'm sure there are plenty of others as well. With all five of the bullets mentioned above and some minor tweaking of the O.A.L. and perhaps a change in primers; I've develpoed a load with 60.0 grs. of VV N-160 that will plunk them all into one ragged hole. These loads are shot in bolt-action rifles so I'd suggest some prudent 10% reductions to start with in a combination rifle, plus ensuring that you've not got those long-g-g pointy SST's too far out there so they could perhaps be jammed into the rifling. Have Fun! Cheers, Number 10

Gerry, In another 30-06, a custom M98 system, LW-SS barrel I have shot 150gr. Hornady roundnoses over 54gr VV N150 for years with great satisfaction. Maybe I should follow your advise and try the 180 RN in the Blaser aswell.

scr, Good Load, my records show 59.0 grs. of IMR-4831 with the NBT as a real one-holer, too. reindeer, I know alot of folks use VV N-150 in their 06's but I prefer VV N-160, especially with the heavier bullets. Others here as well have been quick to praise the performance of the 180 gr. Hornady RN's, try it, you'll like it. Cheers, Number 10

I shot 58.5 grains of AA4350 and a CCI-200 behind a Speer 165-grain GS for several years. Literally a one-hole group at 100 yards out of a customized Eddystone...

I've only used this load in one rifle but its brilliant in my Browning 1885 30-06: 165 Nos B.T. Fed 210M primer RL 22 - pretty much a case full. I have to vibrate the case to get the charge in and its a compressed load. I'll let you decide how much works for your rifle. A big plus with this load is that you can get over 3000 fps with a 165 gn bullet. Thats pretty much like getting the velocity of a 150 in a 165 for free. Also, its pretty much impossible to use too much powder in this load, at least with the cases I'm using. I don't see RL22 recommended much for the '06 but with 165's its magic for me. It just occurred to me that in a magazine rifle the seating depth required may be just too deep with this much powder in the case. It would depend on the rifle I guess. . Reading the Instructions - a sure sign of weakness and uncertainty.
