OK here's the scenario. You have only one choice for powder and you want to shoot cast bullets(without gas-check) in pistol caliber rifles from .38 caliber up to the 45-70. What would be your choice? Accuracy is the goal. | ||

Well, I don't class the 45-70 as a pistol type cartridge, but here goes. Unique. Works just fine in pistol cartridges and can duplicate black powder specs in the 45.70. Ten gr. of Unique in the 45-70 with a 300 gr. cast bullet is one of my favorite plinking loads for the 45-70. Paul B. | |||

I know about the Magnum Research gun, but it isn't commonly seen. matter of fact, I've only seen pictures and we all know how pictures can be faked nowadays.   I just don't consider the 45-70 as a standard general handgun round, Contenders, Encores and BFR not withstanding. As a matter of fact, I'm not too thrilled with handguns of any type being chambered in rifle rounds. When the Gun Control Act of 1968 went into effect, and round that went into any kind of handgun was subject to being entered into a book that the BATF could come and get at any time. This included even the lowly (?) .22 rimfires. Even reloading componenets such as any bullet that could be used in a handgun got registered in that little book. Considering he attitude of the honchos at BATFE today, what makes you think they might not reinstitute that policy, all in the name of national security, of course?  Paul B. | |||

Unique is certainly a good choice. I think Alliant 2400 would also fill this requirement. | ||

Well, I have loaded blue dot in a 38 special and it was very accurate. I have loaded it in rifle calibers up to 444 Marlin and it was very accurate. I have loaded it in a 45 Colt and it was very accurate. I also tried Unique in the 38 and the 45 Colt, and the 45 ACP and the 444 Marlin, Blue Dots accuracy in all of them blew the doors off of Unique. With no slam to Unique which has been around a long time, I have to go with Blue Dot, in the scenario you presented. Cheers and Good shooting seafire | |||

I use Blue Dot in everything I own....if the loading book dosn't list B Dot as an option, I sell that handgun (and never buy that calibur again). 9mm....38 Special....357...41mag...45acp...45 Long Colt is all I load. (I'm loading 9mm hardly at all these days... it's cheaper to buy factory). Blue Dot works in them all, and no need for magnaum primers. | |||
