I recently acquired a 458 Lott and have been experimenting with loads. I previously got good velocity (2070 fps) and excellent accuracy in my 458 Win Mag using H4198, so I thought I'd try it in the Lott. I used 70 grains behind a 500 grain Woodleigh Weldcore and achieved an average of 2250 fps, with acceptable accuracy at 50 yards. The only problem I noticed was that the trigger "bit" my finger just a tad. Recoil was not bad but certainly more than the Win Mag. There were no signs at all of high pressure. Has anyone else used 4198? I like it because it is an Extreme powder so I don't have to be especially concerned about temperature differences, and it requires no compression. I wonder if I could back off a little, stay around 2200 fps, and eliminate the trigger finger discomfort?

I think H4198 is a little too fast for the Lott. Pressure can hit the roof quickly before you know it. I think H4895 or VARGET is a better choice, especially at 458 Winchester's velocities. Good luck.

Mingo; Do you have a 4895 load for a 500-grain soft that you like? Also, what about 2520? I've heard it's a good powder for the Lott.

I liked RL15 in my lott, it was compressed, but able to achieve 2280 fps over a 500 gr hornady soft from a 21" barrel. The caveat is that gun also had a really long throat, so one needs to be carefull when working with other folks data in wildcats. For fun practice loads, try RL7 over a 350 gr speer or Hornady. I started with max 458 win mag loads and worked up until accurate. They shot well in the 2400-2500 fps range, and were much more enjoyable to shoot then the 500's.

My favorite 458 Lott load is 83 grains of H4895. I average 2320 fps out of my 24" barrel.

Nitro Express, Sorry I forgot about this post. With Hornady 500-grain SP, 80-83 grains of H4895 should work real well. Good luck.
