loaded some 140gr honady HPBT using IMR 4064
Rem brass. wsm primers.

I have shot many different loads in various .270
winchesters.I currently shoot the following.

winchester brass
56.5 grains of Imr 4350
130 grain winchester soft point or rem p.s.p.
cci#250 primer

This load gets me right at 3080 fps with a 22" barrel from my featherweight classic and it shoots it well.

For about 33 years now my old 270 has used 59-H4831-130 Hornady flat base Interlock. Last year I played around a bit with 60 RL-22 with the same bullet, but I'll probably stick with the H4831 for a deer load.
This year I'm taking the 140 Accubond with H4831 on a cow elk hunt. My son is using H4831 and the 140 TSX.

I tried some h4831sc amd 140 gr intrlock
and was about a 2" grouper for me
model 70 shoots about any thing though.
i didnt make the draw this year but hope i can next year.
sure would like to put another elk in the freezer.
I was thinking that I might use the 140 interlock on a elk.
the ole 300 is pretty heavy to carry all day.

I have tried many loads in .270s through the years. I would say the most accurate load across several .270s has been 150 Hornady SP and 56-57 gr H-4831. Have also had very good luck with H-4831 and various 130s, but slightly better luck with IMR-4831 with the lighter 130 & 140 gr. bullets.

130 gr Sierra Game Kings with 53gr of IMR-4350. Another I like is 150gr Game Kings with 50.5gr of IMR-4350. Not super fast but both make little tiny groups at 100 yds.

55.0 gr of IMR 4831 and 140 gr. Barnes TSX gives me 2975 fps from the Oehler Chrony out of a Win 70 featherweight. I use standard Winchester or CCI primers, and generally remington brass. An easy 1 MOA when I do my part.
Good Luck.

My old favorite load for my Pre-64 standard is 57.3 grains of IMR 4350, Winchester brass (vintage), Winchester 8 1/2 LR primer with 130 gr Hornady SP. This load has grouped under an inch at 200 yds. The Muzzle velocity from the 24" barrel was 3257 fps the last time i chronographed this load. I used this rifle and load to take my first Dall Sheep when I lived in Alaska. I retired it from Alaska hunting after that sheep hunt. The gun and load were not the problem. Seems I got uncomfortable with seeing too many men in the brown suit too close for my comfort.

I have a 22" barrel Browning BBR 270 Win. The load I use is 59grs of H4831, 140gr Sierra game King, RP brass with a Rem 91/2 M.The vel is 2825 ft/sec.Groupes Appx 3/4" 3shot groupes. I lent it to a friend this moose season and he bagged a medium bull with it at 90 yds.I wasn't crazy about the bullet performance though.

Reloaded some 270's for a friend's custom .270Win this week. Used 130BT and 150 Sierra GK's. They were both accurate; however, 57.5gr of WW Magnum Rifle in a WW case and a 210M (FC) primer shot groups that were 7/8" center to center with me shooting an unfamiliar rifle. I felt each round went where it was pointed. Velocity in the Hart barrel averaged 2900 fps for about eight rounds.

Problem: I am running out of WW Magnum Rifle Powder. Anybody know of a source or a powder that will duplicate its performance? I heard RL22 was a clone. Any truth to that?? Kudude

just got back from hunting .
I shot two deer at about 175yrds,
First was through the heart it ran about 30 yrds and the second one was hit in the lungs and ran about 50yrds
The 140 hornady imr 4064 did its job. nice clean holes and no meat damage.
KUDUDE" I think the R22 is a lot faster powder than the WW mag powder.

Hornady Light Magnum 130 grain SST. Could probably get a "little" better accuracy handloading, which I used to do for this caliber, but it just is not worth it. I am getting 3225 fps out of my rifle which is dedicated to Coues and Pronghorn. And it works very well. My longest kill was at 397 yds and the one this year at 248 yds. thumb

This load may not work in all rifles but has performed well for me.

62.0 Grains of H4831SC in Winchester brass using a CCI primer and 130 Grain Nosler Baslistic Tips. It is too warm in many rifles and needs to be worked up to in order to see if your rifle is able to handle it. Out of a 22" barrel chronograph around 3100 fps.

I'm working on a new 270. Started out with Hornady 130 SP Interlock and H-4831 with CCI-200 primers and R-P cases. At 60 grains got 3130 fps on the chronograph and 3/4" groups through a 22" Shilen #1 barrel. An older Remington M700 Mountain Rifle likes 62 grains (3150 fps) and also shoots real well with a 150 Nosler Partition and 60.5 RL-22 (3000+ fps/1"+ groups).

57 grs. of H-4831 and a 150 gr. speer. I get just over 2800 f.p.s. I have some 4831 sc but I have'nt chronographed any of it yet. I've used the regular 4831 for over 30 years. 57 grs. of rl-22 with the same 150 gr. speer gets 2923 f.p.s.

Had a TIkka T3 I gave to my dad that shot 5 shot groups under .6" with:
150 grain Sierra Game Kings
56 grains RL22 (max is 58.5, Alliant used to have this on their site, but they've changed the load with a speer bullet)
Remington primers (this was the magic for this load, switched FROM CCI Benchrest and took half inch off my groups)
COAL 3.325"
I used Winchester and Norma brass. The Norma has slightly less capacity/ is thicker, but didn't shoot any better.

Another load I shot was a 120 grain Barnes Banded Solid with 59 grains RL19. I played around with a couple different charge weights (57 and 59) and the hotter load shot much better. Max is 60 grains. I would recommend a fairly shallow seating depth as this is a long bullet.

I developed loads for my son's 270 using 130, 140 and 150gr bullets. The 140gr Interlock shot so well with IMR 4831, we settled on it for an all around load for anything from PD to Elk. (No, I don't mean a dedicated PD load - just targets of opportunity)

Sorry, just noticed this. If I remember it was either 58 or 59 gr. of H4831SC. We didn't get into any elk but that is the best load we've found for his finicky M700.

I use this load in my daughter's rifle, a Remington Stainless/Synthetic ADL 22"barrel. Almost no recoil, sub inch groups at 100 yards. Also, on the 2 Blacktails she has killed with it this year went less than 80 yards combined. One interesting thing I did notice about bullet performance at this kind of velocity though, it tends to throw a bunch of "stuff" out the other side.

I've hunted, mostly in Utah, with a Remington 700LH in 270win for a few more years than you, I'm 60 now. I've taken nearly 35 muley's with old Sierra 130gr BTS, CCI-200's, (CCI-250's in very cold weather), 58-60grs H4831 and now H4831SC.. Great load, the rifle still groups around 1/2" at a hundred....

I have used the Barnes 140gr.(XBT-bullet, it was a couple of years ago) for a couple of cow elk. I used 58gr RL-22 w/CCI-200's. Both were one shot kills, at about 100yrds. One standing faceing me, the other broad side.... The cow shot head on, walked about 10ft and dropped, the other was a heart, lung shot, it jumped and ran about 50yrds..... The bullet from the head on shot stopped just before the stomach and was recovered, the bullet from the broadside shot was thru and thru.... I wish the bullet from the broad side shot had created a larger channel, but it did the job...

Accubonds tend to do that no matter what the speed. They are designed so the tip of the bullet fragments on impact and the base keeps penetrating. Lots of shock to the animal but things can get a bit messy at closer ranges. They work best at about 300 yds IMO.

I use them in my .270 as well
