My M70FW thrives on H4350.

My lttle ruger really liked that bullet with 44.1 grains of H-4831 sc. that load is prety light.
What kind of action you building your Roberts on ?
I have the ruger mentioned above and a custom springfield 03.
I also used the 117 grain hornady RN to form cases in my Roberts AI.
a light load of W-760, this lode gave 1 hole groups.
I was quite impressed.
The rn hornady is designed for the 25/35 winchester lever action.
I would not expect it to give real good game preformance if driven very fast.
Please keep me informed about your rifle and loads. Obviously I love the roberts...tj3006

My bob is shooting Sierra 117 grain SPBT's with astonishing accuracy and the load is 41.5 grains of IMR-4350, I have no idea of the velocity but the accuracy is great so I could care less of the speed.
My old lady's 257 bob is shooting 100 grain Sierras very well with 41 grains of IMR-4064.
Hers is a bone stock Ruger Ultra Light shooting sub MOA and mine is a 96 Mauser with an ultra light contour Pac Nor barrel 23" long.
No game reports for the two rifles except I shot a Coyote which of course died from the meeting with bob.

Deer slayer,
I built a 25,06 with a 26 inch Douglas tube on a MK10 a few years back, I put it in a Boyds Thumb hole. I went with the brown laminate.
I buoght a Nikkon Buck march 4.5X14 with side focas for it.
Its a little on the heavy side but it is a real good long range rig.
FYI. I took a fork for mulie awhile back with my Ruger Roberts. Load was a 100 grain barnes tripple shock over 46 grains of H-414. MV was 3140 from a 20 inch tube and it did a great job on the mule deer.
I bought a box of 115 grain T-shocks for my Roberts AI and my 25,06.
Don't really need the expensive bullet for deer but they are so darn acurate that I get a kick out of the tiny groups...tj3006

My rifle: Remington Cust. Shop M7ms in .257 Roberts. 20" Bbl.

Still relatively early in testing (I've only put 200 ish rounds through the rifle), results are very promising as follows:

42.0 gr. IMR 4350. 117gr. Hornady SST. Chrono's at 2730fps through my 20" bbl.

My next series of tests will be to dial up to 43 or 44gr. of IMR 4350 (CAREFULLY!!! Above Book Max.) and the 117gr. SST or 117 Sierra GK. The 117gr. Sierra has an excellent reputation for accuracy...

Regards,

Robert

I am trying to get a little bit systematic with my load development with my custom Roberts.
I picked it up from my smith yesterday , and did some shooting before comming home.
Looking at my notes on the limited shooting I did with this rifle before I gave it back to the smith for checkering ,combined with the shooting I did yesterday.
Clearly it likes IMR-4350 real well.
A great source for data is the hodgden web site. Hodgden IMR and winchester powders are all owned by Hodgdon, now.
And listed, is one table for the win and hogden powders as well as a seperate table with data for the IMR stuff.
What is really great for me , is that the tables are set up with starting and max loads and shows preasure readings for both.
My custom is a low numberd springfield.
I really want to stay no higher than 50,000 cup.
So , now my plan is to use IMR-4350 and work up good safe acurate powerfull loads.
I want a 100 grain a 110 or 115 grain and a 117 or 120 grain load. Only loads that group MOA or better will do.
My next shoot will be, 100 grain hornady IL under 45 grains.
100 grain sierra game kings same charge, 110 grain acubonds at 43 grains , a 117 grain sierra PH at 42. grs , a 120 partition at 41.5 and a 120 grain Hrnady HP at 42.
If the weather is decent I will post chrony results and groups next weekend.

One of my favorite loads for my .257 AI is Moly coated 117 gr Sierra Spitzers, CCI 200 primers, and 48.0 gr of IMR 4350. This chronographs 3005 fps, and 4 shot groups are MOA.

This load has accounted for one shot kills on 3 Bighorn and one Dall Sheep, a mountain Caribou, my second largest 6-point Elk, and 2-3 dozen Antelope, Mule, and Whitetail deer.

My rifle also likes Hornady 120 gr HP bullets, IMR 7828, and before it was discontinued, it really liked WW 785.

And deerslayer64d, I just have to ask: Why do you want to shoot round nose bullets in a bolt action rifle?

I guess just becouse I dont know any better , when I was a kid and had a bob that was what it shot . I did pick up some nolser 115 gr bt to try along with the 117 gr round nose . I took my girl out two weeks ago and she made great shots at 230yrds on a hog (head shot ) and another at 190 yrd shoulder shot on a 8 point buck ( droped him in his tracks ) the round nose seem to perform great!!

Great looking gun.

My Ruger Bob is shooting 49.5 grn 4831sc under a 100grn Sierra Game king. It has taken deer hogs and turkey. I have not tried another bullet because this one is devastating on animals.

I took my custom Roberts out last weekend and I had some very good results shooting Hornady 100 grain flat base over 45.5 grains of H-4350.
I was shooting of a bench at 100 yards. And my groups were 3 shot.
I had a group of just under a half inch , and then .18. I fired another group , but just as I fired one shot a .308 case bounced off my head. My concentration was good but not that good.
So the 3 shots were with 2 rounds touching and the 3rd was about 1.5.
I only had 7 of the Hornady bullets left ,
So I loaded them up with 46 grains of the same powder.
I am pumped about the .18 inch group, I am learning to love this rifle !
Its a 03 springfield, with a 24 inch douglas tube,
It is as prety as it is acurate. Gotta get a buck with it this year !

I got to the range last week with some different loads, It dident seem to like the IMR 4350 loads but H4831 @45gr pushing a 117 gr honady RN I got three shot groups I could cover with a nickel . I am still getten used to the gun so I think that load will tighten up. Thanks for all the info , gunna try to get back out this weekend
