Will,
That's a nice looking mule...

Smiler
He's dozing at the hitch rail. In a moment of weakness I got that horse in September(?). I have trepidations about horses but he's turned out to be pretty good. Slow and steady, for a horse. And too good a buy to pass up.

I like to think of him as a short-eared mule!

Bill sent a reply that I sure didn't expect.

"Amen to that, haha!"

Ray, you're old enough, do you recall back in '83 of hearing about Colorado state troopers getting struck by lightning? "Tragedy on Sunset?? Peak". Bill was second in line of 9 men, 12 horses or so and his mule when it hit. Killed the man in front, his horse, Bill's mule under him, pack horse behind, skipped a few and killed a couple more. In all: 1 man, five horses and a mule. Nearly lost Bill from crashing his face in the rocks. Then he was six'3" 190.

He and I had planned that ride from top of Wolf Creek Pass to Durango sixty miles for several years. He couldn't get off work each time, then finally when he could, I couldn't. The local coroner, a doctor and three troopers, his Dad(my uncle) and several other friends were going around a mtn just below timberline mid afternoon in Aug. Very light rain, lightning hitting the top of the mtn. Decided they'd ride the last two miles to a forest service cabin n spend the night. They didn't make it.

Their story was written in one of the Denver Post supplement mags by Marshal E. Downey, his Dad. Enough to make a person cringe reading it.
When I first heard about it I was damned glad I hadn't been able to go.
George

Damn, that was a close one, he never told me about that. I bet the mule was unshod and that's the reason it killed the mule and not Bill..Howsomever, It must have addled his brain however, thus the Sleeping pony bean post.. Smiler

Bill and I have been crossing paths in Africa for some many years..I have an old brochure from one of my past Safari Companies in the 80s as I recall with Bill and Barry Van Herdens' picture on the front page, with a really different kind of big Cape buffalo, I have never seen that much drop in Buffalo horns!!..Neat brochure..
