Wow! Good riding. What were they shooting and what were they shooting at? Hard to tell. No recoil but they were wearing ear plugs it seems.

Peter mostly they shoot single action 45's but some places the association lets them shoot .38's. They shoot a blank that I believe has a small wax plug that comes apart.
They shoot white balloons on the first pass and red balloons after the turn.

Thanks! Makes sense! I think the fast draw guys use wax bullets as well. I wonder how many times a horse gets shot in the ear?

A couple of quotes form the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association

Mounted Shooters use .45 caliber single action revolvers like those used in the late 1800's. Single action revolvers must be cocked each time before firing by drawing the hammer back.

The cartridges fired are called .45 caliber Long Colts. The brass cartridge is loaded with black powder (like that used in the 1800's). This load will break a balloon up to about 15 feet. Live rounds are strictly prohibited at competitions. At each event we have a person to load the rider's guns as he or she enters the arena, and a person to unload the guns after the rider is finished. Riders do not carry loaded guns outside of the arena or when not competing.

Mounted shooting blanks must break at least 5 balloons every time at 10 feet and they cannot break balloons consistently at 20 feet to become CMSA Certified.

That's Kenda, you won't meet a nicer gal. She's tops at the mounted shooting.
The faster you go, the harder it is. She' a record holder.

I was involved with the CMSA for a couple years. Its a lot of fun. The blanks are crimped over, so you cant reload the brass. We started loading blanks with coarse cannon powder and a wad, so we could shoot and practice at the house, and roll our own. Still have to use theirs at a shoot though.
