For a great horse adventure... During WWII a tiny diameter pipeline was run from Norman Wells, NWT to Faro, YT clear across the northern Rockies. From there it went on SW to Whitehorse, YT. After the war the truck-trail hacked out of the Rockies for the pipeline was abandoned, and so was the pipeline. (It was built as an emergency supply for U.S. troops if the Japanese got as far as the mainland of NA, and wasn't needed after the war.) Anyway, 30-some years ago an outfitter in the NWT brought a string of horses over that old route into the NWT every Spring to his area of operations in the NWT. Then each Fall, he would take them back out the same way, as it was too cold and too snowy to be practical to keep horses in the NWT. On the YT end in the FAll, he would arrive eventually at the Alskan Highway and could truck them South. There were NO roads in that part of the NWT at the time, and probably still aren't. Being a fairly clever guy, he sold participation in those trips both ways. It helped him get the horses in and out, and was a greatly enjoyed adventure for those who he took along, or so I have been told. It is a very interesting route in many ways, goes through part of the Liard (River of No Return) drainage, and at one point on the YT side along the way there was a clearing chock-a-block full of WWII trucks, Cats, and other equipment, left there to rust away and rot during and after the War. None was still of any real value, even 30 years ago, but they still attracted a lot of attention. Anyway, for all I know, that trek might still be available. Perhaps a couple of inquiries with the Tourism Departments of the YT and the NWT might yield some info. Or maybe not..... Anyone here know anything additional about it? (I've been to and inspected parts of the old 6" pipeline, so know that part at least is completely true. | ||
