I do like having stones thrown at me. But the menu above says "The Accurate Reloading Forums" "Hunting" "Horses" I do like a 7.62 SLR though.

Nitro, My 45/70 does the job! A few years back I was packing some fish bioligists around in northern B.C. They did not like the fact that I had a rifle. They said that they had bear spray and bear "Bangers" that would scare bears away. I said to them that bear spray and bangers will do me no good, if for some reason, I have to put a horse down. Then I said, " that's O.K, If a horse breaks a leg or something, I will use my axe!" They said,"keep the gun!" Daryl

Your a bad man Nitro But a good 6.5 will do it. There not as hard to put down as donkeys. There are still quite a few feral horses up here. Some wild mules getting around as well. Bakes

Hi, I always wondered if Brumbies were any good as saddle stock, and also if they really do prevent domestic stock from reaching a water hole... My cousin spent a gap year in Oz, most of it shooting Kangaroos and such for a culling operation, but he also shot some horses and donkeys....tough on a kid raised in Ireland!

I have shot a few with my Ruger 30/06 loaded with 165 gr ballsitic tips. I was annoyed I did not have one of my bigger rifles with me but you have to make do with what you have, broadside through the ribs the Nosler 165 gr bt's put them down hard. However I would not take a difficult shot with that load. A .416 Rigby with 410 gr woodleigh's would no doubt ream them from end to end, thats what I wanted to try but never got the chance.

A 30-30 works fine. In the Chilcotin most of the ranchers turn their horses out for the winter and bring them back in March. Their are a number of wild ones out their and horses that have become wild by not being brought in for a few years. It is common for the ranch horses to hang out with the wild ones and they need to be seperated out. The usual process is to spot them by air or to make a sweep with a few riders and drive the bunches into the drift fences and then the pastures. If their is a smart stallion in charge this becomes very difficult if not impossible. A 150 grain convincer stops the foolishness.

Hello; I have a friend who is a PMU rancher. Occasionally, for one reason or another, he has to put one down. This is one little bit of information I've filed away, just in case I ever need it. Draw a line from the base of the ear to the opposite eye. A .22 LR applied at the intersection of the lines is instantaneus. This same guy was on a trail ride in Banff National Park, when they had a horse break a leg. They killed it wit an ax. It wasn't pretty. Grizz

This thread reminds me of a certain gentleman who, when seeing someone mounted, mutters about this silly idea of playing with the food...

Europeans eat a lot of equine. There was a deli here in the 1970's that was using horse for there steak sandwich meat until the usda/fda shut them down. I never ate it but I eat/ate most red meat. ED

I eat a fair bit of it here. It's really good meat, low in fat high in protein and kinda sweet tasting. You cannot tell the difference between foal and veal. They sell it in supermarkets as well as having equine butchers that only deal horse meat. When I lived in Rome with my ex firlfriend we used to get some very fine horse burgers from the local butcher.

quote:WriteMe As several people have posted it is possible to hunt or shoot horses in Australia. Indeed there are several herds considered pests in National Parks that the government wanted shot out but the 'plastic monkeys' (urban greenies) raised a hoop-la over so the culls were cancelled. Personally though I have had the opportunity I haven't shot one and probably won't as they are magnificent beasts. I think a skull would make an interesting trophy.

On Eating Horse..... Here in Tokyo, the "Land of Uncooked Food", one can even enjoy (?) raw horsemeat..... While on a photo shoot for one of the car manufacturers, I was "invited" to join the film crew for dinner at a little restaurant in Utsunomiya, a small town about 90 minutes north of Tokyo. The beer started to flow and all was innocent for a while........ Then, what became known as the "Let's See If We Can Get the Gaijin (foreigner) to Eat This" contest began..... Herring Roe.....REALLY salty caviar-type fish eggs Candied Bees...pretty sure they took the stinger out before serving Crunchy Crab....flash-boiled crabs about 1" across, eaten hard shell and all Sea Cucumber...Extra Really Salty brown goo Spinal Chord of Salmon....No, not the tasty, beautiful red flesh of the fish but the stringy, slimy interior of the backbone. (This went part way down and started to come back up...but we were able to "save face" and keep it down) And finally, the specialty of the house, Horsemeat Sashimi.....nice little rectangles of raw horsemeat..... Yum. On another visit to this same town, some co-workers were taken to a restaurant that served whale. Japan, being one of the last countries with a whaling industry makes a few extra bucks serving the "Endangered Species Platter" in a couple of select eateries.
