I recently finished the book A Hunters Wanderings in Africa by Frederic Selous. Its a great book about hunting during colonial times in Africa. In it there are a number of times he mentions that horses can't be taken into the "fly country" and oxen had to be used. I assume that somehow the bite of Tsetse flies must be fatal to horses via some infection or parasite that doesn't effect oxen. Anyone know what he is talking about?

I once hunted in SA with a man who had two of his horses killed by lions while out in the bush.

Africa is not a horse-friendly place!

As to the tsetes fly, back in the old days, some horses survived the disease and were consider "salted". They were worth a lot of money back then.

African wildlife also die from tsetse fly bites. Even the tough old Cape Buffalo has died by the thousands from this disease.

I was under the impression those tough little Basuto ponies were somewhat resistant, but I could be wrong. Lane?

Just watched a documentary about Teddy Roosevelt, showed him riding what looks like one of those ponies, on his African Hunt.
