What's the going rate for Norwegian Fjord mares in the 5-10 year old range. How many more foals could you expect out of them? I like their drafty nature, and sweet disposition. I think they would do well in Alaska, and thought it might be just the ticket to run a few into the Brooks for sheep and caribou.

I Have been trying to find a Norwegian Fjord breeder who would cover my perch mares with no luck they will not breed to none Norwegian Fjord's so I have been thinking about buying one myself. Pure Fjord's are great for alot of things and for alot of people but not for me I like my hunting horses 15.2-16 hands and 1400lbs-1600lbs. My mares I want to breed are 16.2 and 1800lbs+ just abit on the big side. I think a cross to a 14.2-15 hand Fjord stud would make one hell of a good hunting and faimly horse.

Too bad you can't find a breeder. The fjord crosses make some interesting horses. I had a g guy bring 2 Fjord /Welsch mares to breed for a pair of pony mules for driving. They made some nice little mules. Never saw a draft Fjord cross. It always amazes me why people are afraid to breed their blooded horse to another breed or grade horse. It does nothing to detract from the breed. You should be able to find someone who will ship semen to you from the lower 48 for your mares. I'd like to see the offspring. Good luck! Skyline.. Does Patterson still run the sale barn in Dawson? I have not been able to find anything on the net with a good phone number I seen sevral crosses down around Fort Stjohn last year during deer season. Well this year maybe I should just haul my trailer and my check book deer hunting with "looking for a short legged stud" writen on the side of the trailer if nothing else my inlaws would get a kick out of it.

Peter.....shipping will be horrible. We sold a few quarter horses across the pond. It was $12,000 to ship them. Ouch!!! ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

It grates on my sensibilities when I hear or read about people wanting to cross Fjords with other breeds, or make mules. I could say a lot, but I'll limit my comment to just saying that the Fjords are fine as they are, and a person should try them before going to the custom or improved version with cross breeding. You will not end up with an improved horse, but merely an aberration. You have misunderstood the breeders in saying they are "afraid" to breed the Fjord with another breed. Instead of being afraid, they just simply loathe the idea. As far as the Fjords being suitable to Alaska, I can't think of a better match. They come in a variety of sizes, small to fairly large, and man can they pack. I went from mules to Fjords, and then wondered why it took me so long. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

as a breeder myself i never understood the problem with crosses, as long as you accept that it might be peoples only way to get some of the qualitets of the breed that you have. as i understand it the fjords are quite expensive in your neck of the woods, where around me they are everywhere, when i got into the gypsy breeding the horses cost next to nothing but now you cant get a entry level stallion under 10.000$, but people who dont want to be a breeder, still want the horses but dont have the cash, crosses are a fair way to do it. about the mules i dont know never ridden one and proberly never will, i think they are ugly and i will never do a cross with donkey but that is just me. just my 2 cents peter

Well I did it bought the kids a little yearling Norwegian Fjord filly price was right and I'm a sucker for brown eyes. Plus now I have a lead on a stallion down south that I mite just end up with. I don't loathe the idea of crosses some people just don't like thier feet to drag when riding a horse. So if all goes well in a few years my pack string will be smaller and mostly Fjord crosses.
