Years ago while working on a horse owning friends farm, I dropped a cmu block on my foot that took most of the toe nail off my big toe. Very painful! My friend gave me something he only called "horse salve" to smear all over my toe. Whatever it was it took all the pain and soreness away in a short time. As I recall it was a clearish purple color and looked and had a texture similar to chapstick.

Do any of you horse owners know what this stuff is? My friend passed away a while back or I'd ask him. I've knocked another toe nail off and would love to get some more of this miracle salve.

I've thought about this for a bit, and have no real answer for you, though my wife thought about the "purple stuff" we put on calves after de-horning and castrating. Damned if I can think of the name right now though. Don't know that this would be my first choice for my own foot though. I posted your question on a hunting dog forum that I'm also on. A bunch of those folks use Ten Walkers and they may know. Good luck.

Thanks daniel77. I've looked on line at some equestrian places, but none of the stuff I saw was what I remember.

I don't know if it is the same thing that you used before, but someone recommended Equi Block and said it worked fairly well. He meant on horses of course. I do not know if it's purple, or safe to apply to an open wound, but you might research it a bit.

Years ago, a vet. pal gave me a product called (as I recall) "morumide" that worked wonders on open wounds. Have any of you folks heard of this???

I found this thread interesting as I have had similar experiences. I can tell you one thing for sure not to put on a cut GRANULEX. That shit burns unbelievably. Now I understand why the dogs and horses react the way they do when they see that can.

Rawleigh's Salve, 'Good For Man or Beast'

The purple salve is vaseline with potassium permangate. It keeps the wound pliable and oxidizes all common microbes.

And stay away from "blue spray", we used it in RSA when game catching and I sprayed it on a big -opne - blister in my palm...it hurt worse than hell.

Sounds similar to Cut Heal. It's caustic and prevents proud flesh.

I know what the label says, but in my experience using Cut Heal virtually assures a case of proud flesh. I do not use it anymore, at all. A great home cure for a bad cut is to apply bacon grease for a few days. It flat out works.

Blue Spray is Jensen Violet and it really works on Jock Itch, cuts and abrasions but you better be prepared to do a St. Vitas dance..It is also a good wood dye, its made from walnut extract. It was and is the all time "cure all" of the American horseman.

The purple stuff you mention was used for years but I cannot recall the name of it other than the Mexicans on the border called it Ticoli??

Probably the best horse remedy for you toe is Udder Creme from any Dairy Product house or vet..

Modern medicine probably has some better stuff. I know a lot of cowboys that have created some serious problems medicating themselves with vet products, self included!
