Here are a few pictures of my 6 year old mule Sam. He spent 2 months in Roy, MT being trained to drive. He'll need a tune up this Spring and I have a cart ready to go!! This is Sam being harnessed up by Donna Norgaard. She has won the Bishop Mule Days world championship for driving 2 times in a row. Sam being ground driven by Donna. Sam getting hooked up to the training cart. Sam getting his workout. Sam headed out to the field.

Just curious but what is the hobble attachment on his left front fetlock for?

The hobble is an emergency brake for newbee's if the get goofy you can pull the leg out from underneath them. If it is on both front foot it is called a flying J. They usually get the gist if that is used more than once to stop when asked. Sam has since graduated from that and it is no longer neccessary. Will tackle skidding logs this Spring and try to pair him up, so he can drive team for some experience. We have some events where we mow hay and do it with all old time equipment and draft horses and mules.

In the midwest we call that a flying W if it's on both legs. Interesting

A few months ago I picked up a Haflinger that's broke to ride and drive. Came with harness and forcart. Worked him a little with a sled and graded the road, hauled wood with a trailer behind the fore cart, then I got injured (NHR) and had to take time off all things horse. Looking forward to spring, continuing the learning and fun with some light logging. Good luck with your mule!
