But this time I brought one of my grandsons. He wasn't a whole lot of help except that he got all the women to come over and talk to him, which was worth it to me.

No, but we have a lot of Basque people here in town. Lots of sheepherders and cowboys and some great Basque restaurants.

Which town?

I normally head down to Winnemucca, NV or up to Boise,Idaho. I've heard that California is more authentic style of Basque, but forgot the name of the town.

Bakersfield, California.

We have a bunch of Basque restaurants, some of the best are:

Wool Growers, Noriega's, Pyrenee's Café, Benji's and Chalet Basque.

The Star Café in Elko, Nv. is the best Basque food ever, in fact its the best restaurant in the whole damn world..

Try the lamb chops with mint jelly or better yet a steak with garlic topping. That steak flops over the side of a huge plate and you'll take two lbs of it home with you...Its home style with stuff coming out in big bowls for everyone to help themselves..

The other Basque restaurant in Elko closed last year and it was awesome also..

I have been to many ropings there and always make myself sick eating too much.

Ray,
I've been there but I still think Boise is much better. Too many cowboy poetry wanna be who claimed they are from Texas that wear there pant legs inside there boots. I wonder if there mustache is fake as well.

Basque food is high cholesterols Ray, you might want to stick with chicken for your ticker or stop by Toki Ona next time your there, the best lamb chops ever!
Life is short.

NOrseman,
Its the quality of life that counts, not the years!! I just break down from time to time and try to eat myself to death!! My worse fear at 81 is having some nurse pushing baby food down my gullet and riding a wheel chair as opposed to a good pony..

I am hour and a half from Boise, where is the good Basque restaurant there? I'll give it a try.

NOrseman,
I did grow up in Texas, Marathon and Marfa to be exact. The Big Bend was my stomping ground, we ranched there and dad had a ranch in Mexico near Boquillas at one time..It's the cowboy country of Texas and the marrow of the earth..

Are those black bear and bighorns natives in that area?

Norsky,
There are few black bear in the Big Bend country, mostly around Ft. Davis, but some South of Marathon on rare occasions..A couple of ranches in the Alpine, Marathon area have Big Horns and Elk. the Black Gap Game Reserve has a huntable herd of Big Horns, and Mule deer on a draw bases...Sometimes Desert Big Horns come across the River into the USA, or did at one time as did the Mexican Grizzly Bear, He was a true Silvertip Grizzly but somewhat smaller in size than his Northern cousin. I believe the last Grizzly was shot by Elba or Uless Adams, South of Marathon, and that was about 1950 I think..

Audad, Muflon, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Coues Deer, Del Carmin Whitetail, Regular Whitetail, Mt. Lion, Bobcats, Coyotes, etc. are abundant to the area.
