i have a stainless 458 winchester and would liike to rechamber it to a lott, do i have to leagthen the action as i put a magnum box and the lott will fit in but it wont eject out of the opening as the tip of the bullet hits but it would just clear the case if it had fired. what would you do.

Use a different bullet or seat that one a bit deeper (powder charge permitting). George

I did a similar conversion.....removed the spacer in the magazine.....shortened the bolt stop and ejecter (one could have just bought new parts too) I didn't mill the rear bridge of the receiver as it worked well for the .375 H&H but milling the rear bridge isn't hard to do. Not all smiths can do this as they don't know how to do it so make sure the smith that works on it has done it before....it's actually easy to do.....maybe a couple hundred should do the job. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I just did this conversion with a borrowed conversion reamer. Took about 30 minutes. Put my 375 mag box in the rifle and changed out the ejector to a 375 length ejector and things worked out slick. Not as hard as people try to make it sound. If you can walk and chew gum you can do this. The only easy day is yesterday!

I was about to ask this same question, when I came across this topic. Why would one want to convert a win mag to a lott? As far as the bullet clearance issue, I have a weatherby that is notched on the back of the receiver for clearance. Could I do the same on the win mag for the lott cart?

Hello Rhydet, Question might be, why not?? Looking for that max power level, yet still can shoot the std. 458 Win Mag so you have a bit more versatility with your original firearm. I am sure there are many other reasons, but more "punch" and that it can be done fairly easy are just two reasons comming quickly to mind. I own both calibers and there is a distinct difference in perfomance or at least percieved difference. Never shot an elephant, doubt that I ever do, so in reality may not be any "real world" difference????

From all reports, there is a difference in impact effect on elephants. Some use the 550gr Woodleighs at 2150 from the Lott and believe that this enhances performance on elephant even more. One member here who has significant elephant experience is a believer in the 550gr solids. I report this as an ardent fan of the 458wm! BTW, some believe that shooting 458wm ammo in a Lott chamber should be very limited to avoid flame cutting of the chamber wall at the 458wm case mouth and roughening of the bore in front of the 458wm case mouth. The thinking is that the flame cutting and roughened chamber walls may cause extraction issues when full length Lott ammo is used, as is likely when hunting DG. I have no personal experience with this and don't know of any actual cases where this has happened but pass on the information. If I had a Lott I would only use 458wm if my ammo went missing and all I could find was 458wm ammo, which is pretty easy to find, even in the field. And that would be "Just in case..."
