You should call North Fork.

FWIW, all rifles are different, blah, blah, blah, but I get about 2400 fps with Hornady 400 gr. FMJ, 76 gr. RL-15, and Fed. 215M primers in Rem. cases, in a 24" Douglas barrel. It'll get you in the ballpark.

If you don't have one you need a chronograph!

I have two freinds who use this bullet in their 416 Remingtons.

Start out with 74 grains RL-15, this will give you about 2,400 fps and mild pressure.

You can probably work up to as high as 2,575 fps and still be 10 percent below factory Remington pressure which is pretty darn hot.

Will,

Good point I did call North Fork and got the needed info.

Andy,

Thanks I have heard from others that the Rem factory is fairly hot.

I just got the 416 yesterday and want to get some loads worked up so maybe it can go to ZIM and put a hole in an ele.

Big B ,,, The Barnes # 3 manuel shows 80 gr of H4895 w/ 350 gr Tri Shock .... MAX ..Barnes also makes a 350 gr banded solid which will work better than anything smaller or slower IMO..Every bullet and barrel is its own I like Hodgdon powders as they are more temp. stable... Have fun with your 416...

I pulled some Barnes 400 grain Banded Solid Remington Factory loads apart a couple of years ago. 78 grains of a powder that looked very similar to RL-15. Yikes.

I load my Rem 416 with 81 gr of RL15 with Hornady 400 SP gr bullet and that gives me 2415 FPS. I haven't seen the North Fork bullets for sale.

jro, you have to go to the NF site and order what you need. They're never on any other site for sale.

Is the current factory ammo as hot as it was when it first came out? I had heard they dropped the pressure a little, but am unsure of the quality of the source.

I think I will start with 75 grains of RL-15 and work up from there. North Fork has a nice website, just call and order the bullets you need.

BigB ----- The .416 Remington load that did the job for me in the Selous on Buffalo is 78 grains RL-15 with a Fed 215M primer and 370 grain North Fork soft first round followed by 370 grain North Fork solid subsequent rounds. They printed within .5 inch of each other dead on with the solid lower than the soft. When I was having a good day they were practicaly in the same hole. When I target an animal, it is with a North Fork bullet. wave thumb Good shooting.

Don_G used a 416Rem in Tanz last fall, using all three NF bullets (soft, CPS and FN solid) Here is a link to a thread about his load development...here.

And here is another thread with his final loads and some target pics...here.

Phurley,

Thanks for the information, I can only hope my gun shoots as well as yours.

Canuck,

Thanks for the link to the Don G post. It seems he had good luck also with his 416.

I hope to use mine for ele and a backup for leopard.

I am going to have to try these bullets.I have tried about everything else in the .416 rem mag.I have tried barnes 325 gr which they quit making and I loved that bullet at 2800 fps.I have tried barnes 400 gr solids ,350 gr speer mag tip an awesome cheaper bullet and the 410 gr woodleigh which is a real thumper of a bullet for big stuff.I love the 416 rem mag and have 6 rifles in it.The reloader 15 podwer seems the perfict powder for the 416 rem mag with any bullet I tried.I also use the federal 215 mag primers.I am suprised that Remington dropped the 416 down to one load.I really like the 350 gr swift bullets best of any bullets I have tried.I bought about 10 packs at reduced priced when the quit making them at $20 a box what a deal.I have shot the heck out of my 416 rem mag and think it is the most awesome dangerious game rifle. You would be suprised at some of the 200 yard groups that you can shoot.I had a stainless Remington model 700 customized with a very nice break and floor plate which should be factory.I am thinking of putting either a lazer or flashlight for the tent at night when things big and furry love to visit the most.I will try some North Fork bullets also.

BigB you will ove the North Fork flat nose solids for elephant. Try the cup point for buff. I haven't but will. The flat points penetrate more than required for buff, even for a solid. Great for elephants though.
