It sounds like an oxymoron, kinda like 'Radio for the Deaf...' [Razz]

Anyway, will you guys talk a little bit about the advantages/disadvantages of the different types of magazines for bolt-action rifles, please?

I'd like to see what your thoughts are on the blind; floorplate; and detachable; as well as the Browning style of the combination of floorplate and detachable.
Tell us of experiences or theories, either positive or negative in the use of these. [Smile]

I have used regular floorplate-type magazines (CZ 550) and blind magazine with "emptier" (Kongsberg/Lakelander 393) and without (Blaser R93). I like blind magazines a lot, fired several thousand shots and hunted in all kinds of non-tropic conditions without any kind of problems. No lids that can open accidentaly and a closed stock without opening on the underside.

I hate detachable boxes, they get lost and they are fragile. My experience is mainly from rimfires, but a friend of mine lost both his bolt and the magazine (Faulty retainers, Sauer 202) hunting deer last year, borrowed my rifle until we found the parts he losts (after three days in the rain they were pretty reddish-brown..). The solution with floorplate/detachable box is in my eyes stupid, lots of metal to achieve no advantage what so ever. But I have never used them.

I always load/unload a bolt-gun through the top, so I'm a big fan of the original military floor-plate in a Mauser 98. You can open it if you need to, for cleaning etc, but it can never fall open accidentally. This will always save me a couple hundred bucks on a custom job, too! [Big Grin]

Hmmm..This is the FIRST negative comment of
the Sauer 202 from all I heard and read about this
rifle.
trb, could you tell something more about how that
happened?
I suppose your friend was carrying the rifle slung
barrel-up on his shoulder, with the bolt open or
(at least)the bolt handle raised. In this case
bolt stop failure would result in bolt falling
off from the rifle to be lost.
How did he lose the magazine? Was it(for lack of a
better term)recoil-induced self-detach or something?
Any other 202s plagued with this problem?

IMO, a blind magazine is not a good idea. If it ever jams in feeding a round, it is next to impossible to un-jam it without opening a floor plate.

I have to say I've found the openable floor plate is a good way to unload without using the action too much. I don't have much experience with anything ele except magazine type firearms. I have one "dangerous game" rifle, a .376 Steyr, with "10 round" magazine, actually a 7 round capacity of magnum rounds. I don't remove the magazine, since the catches are plastic and the shoulders are plastic. They are pretty indestructable, but I don't want to take a chance. In this configuration, it is now a "blind magazine" except for some emergency.
