Well, I need a single shot. I need a 416 Rigby; I think I might kill two birds with one stone-- does anyone have a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby? If so, how do you like it? Do you shoot it scoped? Irons? Any modifications needed? I'd be buying a stainless and laminate model if I get one.

Yes sir, I have a Ruger No.1 chambered in .416 Rigby and can't say enough positive things about it. Mine is blue & walnut. I have looked for the SS & laminate and think I saw them on the Cabelas site at a reduced price (I think Ruger has discontinued the SS in .416). I am working on a load using the Barnes 300-gr @2900 fps for large plains game. The rifle is short and handy in thick bush still maintaing a 24" tube. The rifle is muzzle heavy, but I like this type balance. Shoots great off shooting sticks. Trigger is terrific. Rifle is handsome. Mine is MOA.

Recommendations:

1) Trade the scope rings that come with the No.1 for a pair of off-set Ruger rings. Call Ruger customer service to arrange this.

2) I use mine with a Leupold 1.5-5 illuminated reticle.

3) I disconected the ejector feature. Much smoother this way.

Good luck to you.

Hey Buliwyf, why would you trade the box set of rings with off-set rings? So you can see the opens sights, I imagine?

I have shot one a few times, it belongs to a good friend. He has the walnut stocked, blued rifle and it is very attractive. You will not necessarily like the stock recoil pad, I don't.

TH,

The off-set rings allow you to mount the scope closer towards you for better eye-elief with most scopes. The standard rings that come with the No.1 (Same as M77 rings) mount the scope to far forward because of the barrel quarter rib on the No.1.

Ruger will trade you out. No charge.

Oregon:

While I never had a #1 in .416 Rigby, I did have one in .416 Remington Magnum. They are great guns but I finally sold mine off because I found the recoil to be absolutely brutal. The #1 stock is so straight and there is just no give in the action. In the heavy calibers they really whack you, especially when shooting it from the bench. I love #1's but now, if I want another, I will buy one in a smaller caliber.

Got a NO. 1 in 416 Rigby a while back. Walnut and blued. First thing I did after firing a few shots with a 400 gr. Hornady was cut the stock and mount a Decelerator pad on it. Recoil with the stock pad was brutal. Love the rifle. I also traded my rings for a set of offset rings to mount my 1.5-5 Leupold scope. Love it now.

Do it right the first time.

My tentative plan is to cut the stock and install a decelerator and some lead to get the balance to just ahead of the pin on the action. I like the heavy barrel, but not the forward balance; makes the rifle a bit sluggish, though they do hang well.

Oregon45 - I had a this rifle (SS w/ lam stock) on a #1 and sold to a friend - really regret that as it shot extremely well / accurate clap.

Would have made an excellent platform for a 28" barrel 510/460 Wby Imp like RIP has.... BOOM

Never should have sold that one killpc

I've had one for about 12 years. Wonderfully accurate with 400 grain Swift and Hornady bullets, but as noted above they kick like a mule and the factory recoil pad is worthless. I use a 4X Leupold with factory Ruger rings that have QD levers installed.

I shoot a #1 Ruger Tropical in .416 Rigby that has some of the most stunning wood I have ever seen on a rifle. I put a 3X9 Ziess Conquest on it and it is a dead eye. My loads are 98 grains of RL-22 or 104 grains of H-4831 with the Fed 215M primer. I plink with a 400 grain Hornady round nose and get serious with a 370 grain North Fork, the later is super accurate in my rifle. wave Good shooting.
