What would you do? No not to Axel but to a ruger no1 in 45-70 I don't what to sell it but I'm bored of it realy realy bored I have been reloading for this for over five years now and have been looking at 458 or a 458 lott but the short barrel on the ruger would be a waste of time so what would you rebarrel it to? regards huntdownunder

How about .450 Nitro Express? You'd need a change of extractor and a re-chamber, but I think that's about it. George

I have a Ruger No1 that began life as a 45-70, and is now a 458 RCBS, the only change other than re-chambering was I installed a Pachmayer decellarator recoil pad. This conversion only requires a rechamber job, with no extractor work at all. The case is made from 45 basic brass (HDS) shortened to 2.75", with a case capacity of 100.13 grs of water, compared to the 45-70's 75.51 grs water, and the 458 Win Mag's 93.29 grs water! A load consisting of 68.0 grs IMR4064,Fed 210 LR primers, 400 Speer FNSP gr bullet, 2035 fps. This is a serious load, and is easy to load on a backed off 45-70 die, A fun chambering! Hunter, if you just want to rechamber, why not the 450 rigby ?? Or if you rebarrel go for a .416 Rigby maybe.

Assuming you want to stick with a Ruger #1 but want more power, I think the most cost effective thing to do would be to sell it and apply the proceeds toward another rifle. Rugers aren't that expensive but rebarreling, adding sights, blueing, etc. is. I have a #1 in 458Win that I opened up to 458Lott, an easy and low-cost conversion that adds significant power. Or you could buy a #1 in 375H&H or 416Rigby for little if any more than the value of your 45-70. [ 10-23-2002, 01:17: Message edited by: fla3006 ]
