My First Big Bore: Montana 1999 in .375 H&H

rnoviMy First Big Bore: Montana 1999 in .375 H&H
When Jedd Harms first posted this:
I thought to myself "Now doesn't that look nice." .375 H&H, 20" Barrel, Stainless, on a Montana Action & Barrel, Brockman's Lam Stock.
And then he reposted the price to $975. Like a trout sees a worm, I bit. Fast.
And This came to my FFL:
Oh my! I think this just may work! It's certainly exactly as Jedd advertised - clean, brand spanking new. I didn't throw it on a scale, but it's not overtly heavy. I think it's around 9# naked.
And now it's time to start working on it. Well, in 10 days (feckin' California gun laws).
So, what's next? Gonna definitely need the action slicked up. The action has that typical stainless steel grittyness. Trigger isn't bad though - a little long and about 4#, but certainly bearable in the short term. I think I will have the stock bedded to be safe...
But...do I put Irons on it? Do I scope it? Hmmmm...
So, how'd I do guys?
Regards,
Robert

Hog KillerI would do both, irons and a scope in a QD mount/rings.

Definitely gonna get irons. Not this week though. I've got time on my side and I really, really want to think through every step of this. It's not only my first Big Bore, but very likely my only "Africa Rifle". So I'm thinking do it once, do it right.

Robert

rnoviBTW, in the short term I have a Leupold VXII 2-7 in the safe I'll use. I might not actually change it - that's a pretty good scope for the rifle.

Robert

Good idea. Build it to your dreams, of your perfect custom. I did.
Here is my custom 375H&H, on a Rem 30S. Lyman 48 receiver sight (ghost ring), NECG masterpiece front, an old Redfield 3-9 Widefield.
I put a Pilkington lever for QD option on my rifle.
458 Lott is in the backgound.

Idaho SharpshooterYou might consider just putting a front sight on it, and getting one of NECG's rear peeps that mount on the rear scope groove.

Rich,
I was thinking about that too. Brockman's has a Pop-up version peep sight. My only concern is whether or not a peep sight is really useable as a "rapid aquisition" sight. I dunno if one could be had as a "Ghost Ring" large ring style?

Robert

Hog KillerIf the above pic is the sight you are referring to, just unscrew the peep, instant "Ghost ring".

Keith, thanks for the comment. But, would you say this type of sight would allow for fast aquisition? As fast as more conventional V-notch styles?
I saw in another thread a Rechnagel (?) pyramid sight with a single line - that certainly looked promising as well...

Robert

RustyI think a ghost ring allows for rapid aqusition.

They are faster to use (for me) than express sights, That is why I am using them on both of my big bores. Pkus you are not covering up a large oart of your target with the bottom of your express sight.

Idaho SharpshooterWhat Hogkiller says, plus one! I've shot his rifles, and for Dangerous Game that set up is just great. I shoot Sharps rifles, all with the tall vernier tang rear sights. Your eye will naturally center the front sight in the center of the "ring". There is a gentleman here who lives in the SE part of the country who makes a peep that replaces the cocking piece shrould. Very tidy option. I am trying to run him down now.

lavacaPeeps are faster than express sights. Assuming you are used to them. After tens of thousands of rounds shooting highpower, peeps are definitely faster for me.

Thomas JonesThat looks like a really nice start.
Put some sights and a good scope on her and you are ready to go.
I have one of the Brockmans pop up peep on my Marlin 45/70.
It is a good set up, FYI. It needs tally rings and by the time I got it on my rifle and bought the rings, it seemed like i had spent quite a chunk of change.
But I works prety well.
NEGC has a nice little sight that goes on a weaver base, but probably is not fast enough to istall in an emergency.
But on the other hand I could shoot prety well with the factory sights on a CZ or better yet , a ruger.

cmfic1So....what did you end up deciding on?
I have pretty much the same Rifle.
My bbl. is finished @ 21". I have NECG "fixed" rear with one folding. If I were to do it again, I would have NECG adjustable rear as is on my Lott & Taylor. Also has Leupold QD rings.....Really happy how it turned out.

Chief EngineerOnce you learn to look through a rear peep as opposed to looking at it, you will find it at least as fast as a scope up close.
As someone has already stated, just unscrew the peep and go to work. I do just that, and inside 50 yards you won't see a difference. Your Eye will center the front sight with no effort on your part.
