All right - here's a bit of backstory. My uncle died last year. He was a retired marine, and a fine man to boot. He and I both had more of a "gun bug" than my dad and my uncle and I would often sort of quietly try to out-do each other and go plinking together. I'd buy a .44 mag, he'd come back sometime later with a .454. I'd pick up a .300, he'd find a .375 somewhere, and I ended up getting a .416 for us all to play with... always in search of that "cannon" For the record, the first time my uncle shot that Rigby, I didn't tell him what it was, and it stepped him back a few steps - cussing that gun all the while. There were other guns like a BMG and more .223s than I want to recount, but it was always the big gun unspoken challenge. Anyway, I have one "nice" rifle now that I had a fellow build me several years ago in a .300 mag, and it's a wonderful gun. But now, I've been thinking of getting something different, sort of as a final farewell and tribute to my Uncle that I know would have made him grin. Maybe get the stock done with the foregreip in an American flag with a red stock and USMC emblem on it... just brainstorming here. I'd have it custom made, single-shot, with dual ghost ring sights but I'm not sure who to go to, or what caliber to go for. Once you go beyond about a 500 jeffery or maybe 505 gibbs, I don't know much about 'em. Also a consideration to some degree is ammo availability. What can you guys tell me about something like the .500 Jeffery, .505 gibbs, .577 Tyrannosaur or a 600 NE? I'm not sure I want to go all the way to a 700 NE, but that's an option too. For me, this wouldn't be anything practical, my Rigby will flatten anything I can imagine I'd ever want to shoot, but this would be more of a novelty and conversation piece, and maybe a tribute to my uncle's search for a really big gun.

Hrmm, the 600OK looks very interesting. Right now I'm leaning more towards buying a base gun of a stainless Ruger #1 in .458 Lott and having it re-worked into a .500 Jeffery. Reedercustomguns does one variant of it, but I'm also looking at sskindustries. I'm not sure what the Ruger could handle, but the .500 seems to be a solid compromise between readily available ammo and brass, and my pocketbook, and easy to work into a nice piece.

.600 Overkill There is a barrel(long chambered and threaded for the CZ550), dies, and brass for sale in the classifieds. One of the guys has decided to go with a .550 instead. If you want the biggest and badest, here it is. Here's your Rigby shell in the muzzle of the .620" barrel: A little bit of recoil and some busted jugs of water: ETA: Here's the ad for the Overkill stuff: .600 Overkill Barrel, Dies and Brass

I like the look of the overkill. I would like to get one in the future as well. Same as Ben589 in the not needing it for practicle reasons but just for fun. Does much need to be done to a CZ550 to get it to fit. I didnt want to have to do extremely expensive mods to the gun ,just for a fun gun. (I realise it will need stock cross bolts and bedding, new barrel etc)

Well since you want to start with a Ruger #1 the largest thing you can put in there is the 577 nitro. But an easier cannon would be to put a 550 Magnum which uses 460 Weatherby brass. I think with the Ruger #1 and it's poor recoil design if you can handle a full load 550 magnum in it you probably have nerve damage and can't feel it. I have had a couple request for Stainless barrels already so that would not be a problem. I am also working on a 550 Magnum long which is a 3.250" case and a rimmed version with a 3.500" case.
