Well the Roth IRA money unlocks this year, so I get to go back to Africa, probably in 2018. I have killed an elephant with a 375, but it was a little light and I have decided to stay bolt trash. A new Montana in SS and plastic is on its way, chambered in 458 lott. So how to feed it? I like Michael's work with the CEB 450 solids, so that is the first choice of bullet. From the data n530 looks very good, but the 4895s are not bad, and AA2520 is right there. Any good reasons to pick one over the other? I have both 4895's and the n530 is a little expensive, is it worth it?

Arniet, Call the folks at CEB, tell them what you have in mind. They will run you out reloading data for several powders. I have called them a few times, they are very helpful.

H4895 and Accurate 2230 are great powders with the 450 gr class of bullets. I dont have any experience with the N powders so I cant say one way or not. Plus, I never developed loads for a hot climate. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

We have had very good accuracy using IMR4320. I still like one of the Hogdon Extreme powders though. Like the others say, I would try H4895 or Varget. That way, you do not run into overpressure in the "hot and sweaty" hunts.

I use H4895 with excellent results.

Yes, H4895 should work very well. I would imagine that even faster powders than H4895 could also produce enhanced velocities. Try H322 for another recommendation in the "Extreme" heat-stable powders. It works very well in the 500AccRel with 450 grains. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Here is some data from Michael McCourry on several powders for the 458 Lott with 450 grain CEB. The data was in a table that I am pasting here. Basically each load includes charge/powder, primer, two velocities and pressure. With a little thought you can figure out the unlabelled numbers. The table format did not transfer in the paste below. Two velocities appear to be two test shots with the difference and average spelled out and in most cases a pressure reading. 450 BBW#13 Solid 11/13/13 450 #13 Solid 80/TAC Fed 215 2387 2385 2 2386 60323 PSI 12/15/11 450 #13 Solid 80/IMR 8208 Fed 215 2366 2364 2 2365 11/9/13 450 #13 Solid 80/IMR 8208 Fed 215 2386 2374 12 2380 58417 PSI--Excellent Load 12/15/11 450 #13 Solid 84/RL 15 Fed 215 2384 2375 9 2380 11/9/13 450 #13 Solid 84/RL 15 Fed 215 2299 2271 28 2285 44727 PSI The RL 15 from 2011 is vastly different from 2013 RL 15--Make Note of This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/11/13 450 #13 Solid 80/IMR 4320 Fed 215 2296 2277 19 2286 51611 PSI 11/11/13 450 #13 Solid 83/IMR 4320 Fed 215 2383 2377 6 2380 58364 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 86/AA 2520 Fed 215 2465 2464 1 2465 63807 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 84/AA 2520 Fed 215 2410 2400 10 2405 58253 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 80/IMR 4064 Fed 215 2307.8 2307.2 0.6 2307.5 50474 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 83/IMR 4064 Fed 215 2398 2385 13 2391 60083 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 80/IMR 4895 Fed 215 2301 2267 34 2284 50092 PSI 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 83/IMR 4895 Fed 215 2361 2342 19 2352 53313 PSI -Excellent PT 11/15/13 450 #13 Solid 85/IMR 4895 Fed 215 2422 2412 9 2417 59338 PSI 11/21/13 450 #13 Solid 79/H-4895 Fed 215 2381 2373 8 2377 56856 PSI 12/12/13 450 #13 Solid 79/V-N530 Fed 215 2397 2392 5 2395 55990 PSI 12/12/13 450 #13 Solid 81/V-N530 Fed 215 2469 2430 39 2450 59675 PSI>>>RETEST 62169 57182 - 4987 59675 12/23/13 450 #13 Solid 81/V-N530 Fed 215 2434 2430 4 2432 58111 PSI 2511 2492 19 2501 MagSpeed Muzzle Velocity I thank Michael for forwarding this. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.
