Well the Roth IRA money unlocks this year, so I get to go back to Africa, probably in 2018.

I have killed an elephant with a 375, but it was a little light and I have decided to stay bolt trash. A new Montana in SS and plastic is on its way, chambered in 458 lott.

So how to feed it? I like Michael's work with the CEB 450 solids, so that is the first choice of bullet. From the data n530 looks very good, but the 4895s are not bad, and AA2520 is right there. Any good reasons to pick one over the other? I have both 4895's and the n530 is a little expensive, is it worth it?

Arniet,

Call the folks at CEB, tell them what you have in mind. They will run you out reloading data for several powders. I have called them a few times, they are very helpful.

H4895 and Accurate 2230 are great powders with the 450 gr class of bullets. I dont have any experience with the N powders so I cant say one way or not. Plus, I never developed loads for a hot climate.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

We have had very good accuracy using IMR4320. I still like one of the Hogdon Extreme powders though. Like the others say, I would try H4895 or Varget. That way, you do not run into overpressure in the "hot and sweaty" hunts.

Yes, H4895 should work very well.
I would imagine that even faster powders than H4895 could also produce enhanced velocities.

Try H322 for another recommendation in the "Extreme" heat-stable powders. It works very well in the 500AccRel with 450 grains.

Here is some data from Michael McCourry on several powders for the 458 Lott with 450 grain CEB.

The data was in a table that I am pasting here. Basically each load includes charge/powder, primer, two velocities and pressure. With a little thought you can figure out the unlabelled numbers. The table format did not transfer in the paste below. Two velocities appear to be two test shots with the difference and average spelled out and in most cases a pressure reading.
