For example, if your recoil MAXIMUM in a single shot rifle is say a 458 lott. Would you be more appropriately armed with a double in a slightly lighter cartridge in say 450/400 to allow for a quicker recovery that lets you benefit from that second shot. Obviously this is just an exercise in mental gymnastics but if you were hunting elephant would you rather have one "sledgehammer" round or two of a lesser but more controllable round.

If you're going to use a Nitro Express-class round in a double, I think you'll perceive the recoil to be less even in the same caliber (not cartridge).

A .450NE in a double should feel 'lighter-recoiling' than a single in .458 Lott.

If you can handle a single in .458 Lott, a well-fitting double rifle in .470NE should be within your recoil threshold .

It this one of them there tiresome and distracting posts? I figger it could be. Rifle recoil can be calculated, and the determination of which has been beat to death in multiple other posts on AR. I could tell you how but then I might be accused of being tiresome and distracting. Know what I mean? But even if you knew how to calculate recoil, how would it be applied to rifle recoil recovery and how would it be applied to elephant hunting? Know anything about elephants or elephant hunting? Recoil has nothing to do with the type of rifle action, or did you know that already and just testing the water? I could go on and on and on.

Just put a pen in your hand instead and write another book! I still refer to your book...especially before an Ele hunt.

When shooting game, especially game that really has your attention, like DG, and particularly elephants, recoil that is unpleasant at the range will be utterly unnoticed. The loud report that makes you reach for plugs AND muffs at the range will be just audible enough for you to know your rifle has fired. Muzzle rise, which is apreciale when you are "loose" at the range disapears when you are focused on the DG.

I see this in my own videos, you can see it in Buzz Charlton's DVDs. Especially his first one.

BTW, I think hunting elephants with a single shot when a good bolt or double rifle is available is stupid.
