My rancher friend had too many water buffalo and invited me out to shoot one. It was a perfect opportunity to use the new .577 600 gr Raptor from CEB, I love that bullet! Minimal recoil and it regulates well with various powder charges in my Searcy, but I shot it over 118 gr of RE15 with a foam filler. It was definatly shooting a buffalo, not hunting a buffalo. One shot between the eyes and it was over. The butcher met us and did all the dirty work

Here is the bullet entry point. I was low an inch or so. I will take some bullet pictures tomorrow as well as some of the rifle.

My kids are sort of spoiled with their shooting. Duck hunting most saturdays and at least 10 days afield big game hunting with a few days missed from school every year to hunt or fish.

Between the eyes doesn't give us much on bullet performance. I love the 600 grain Raptor too because I had it made for my 577s. Shot lots of stuff with it and I think the 600 gr Raptor and 650 solid are perfect for most any 577. Glad you like that bullet too.

I will know shank penetration depth Tuesday. It was at least four feet though. I had to get one of my kids to a school test so after getting him to the butcher truck gutted and skinned we left the rest to the butcher. I am meeting with him Tuesday to get the bullet assuming he found it. Initial inspection looked like it was in the spinal area, I should have taken a picture

I finished her with a .375/300-grain Nosler to the neck after my 460 Wby 500-grain RNSP factory load to the chest left her standing with a nose bleed and no other apparent effect.
I think it was an early Woodleigh non-penetrator at near 2700 fps MV, loaded by Norma back then.

Had it been a CEB NonCon, the sheep in the next pasture might have been at risk, however.

Good idea to shoot the water buffalo in the head, aiming for the tail with the NonCon.

If it had been a CEB brass BBW#13 solid it might have exited the rear end.

Other than in zoos and wildlife parks I didn't know there were water buffalo in the US. Clean harvest and lots of meat. I am sure someone will chime in about how they shoot these all the time with a 223.

Bubalus bubalus is renowned as healthy meat, half the cholesterol and less than one quarter the fat of most beef, and it is tasty.
Almost as good as Bison bison.
