Need help on a Interarms Whitworth .375 H&H that I am interested in to buy. This one has the cal. marked on the barrel in the normal location and style but it has never had express sights, no tapped holes.Has a scope mounted.
The sling swivels are mounted on the stock,no barrel band.
The stock appears to be normal style, but it has two cross bolts, with heads that are covered with what appears to be ebony.
The safety is a Winchester style 3 position.

Are these characteristics normal or has it been modified?
Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you......Jay

They used to sell them as barreled-actions, gloss-blued with no sights nor barrel-band sling base.
They also had a walnut-stocked, gloss-blued "Alaskan" version that might be what you are looking at.

Did Whitworth put a M70 safety on their factory offerings? Don't believe I've seen such. 'Course, there are still new stuffs to be seen, eh.

Seen many, many, never one with a M70 style safe. The early (rather rough) ones had the backwards (off to the rear) side safes, the later had a normal (off to front) side safe.

Here is a long thread on another blog on 2 and 3 position M70 style safeties.

Some info from another blog:

"The Mark X Mauser actions used in the then called "Whitworth Express Rifles" were rifles assembled in England by Whitworth Arms and imported into the US by Interarms. The actions were made in what was then Yugoslavia. They were made by a company named Zavodi Crvena Zastava. Other rifles, actions, and barreled actions were imported directly from Yugoslavia by Interarms under The Mark X Mauser name.

After Interarms, The Mark X action was later imported by Charles Daly and most recently by Remington as the 798 series of rifles. I'm not sure if anyone is currently importing them. The 1990's Balkan War caused these actions and rifles to dry up as far as new imports were concerned for a number of years because the US State Department slapped an embargo on the Yugoslavian arms trade.

The "mini-Mauser" action was also a Zastava product imported by Interarms, Daly, and Remington (Model 799)

The Mark X receivers had the ZCZ trademark - the three letters within a circle - stamped on the left side of the actions. This trademark and the Mark X actions have nothing to do with CZ rifles which are made in Czechoslovakia by Ceska zbrojovka Uhersky Brod. CZ products are imported exclusively by CZ-USA and have the very "un'Mauserly" feature of a removeable magazine."

Here is a late one with the push to off side safe:

On the left side the cal. is marked in script 375 H&H magnum on the barrel,Whitworth on receiver ring, then a circle with a star inside,Alexandria Virginia,Interarms,Manchester England, then the CZ symbol.
The bolt handle is straight down, not swept-back,and has the M70 style 3 position safety

Maybe it's a customized barreled action, with safety and bolt handle modifications, custom stock?
The Alaskan had the usual push-button, sliding, two-position side safety, and had some iron sights on the barrel, single leaf rear.
Sounds like a desirable rifle to me, if the price is right.
Next issue: Price.

BUY NOW!
The Leupold is perfect for the rifle, has a lifetime warranty, and for that price you will be money ahead even if you wanted to rebarrel.
It is probably a little-shot safe queen and will be outstanding most likely.
I never knew of an Interarms Whitworth barrel I didn't like.
That means I like Whitworth barrels. tu2

Your rifle is probably an Interarms Mk-X in .375 I suspect, as all the Whitworths had 3 leaf sights on the barrel, some variations do exist I have been told. I have a .458 Whitworth Express that does not say Whitworth on it but was made in Manchester, England and has all the Whitworth stuff on it. It is supposed to be an early Whitworth.

I don't recall seeing any Whitworths big bores that had short forends and a barrel band swivels, all cross bolts are steel and not wood plugs, all safeties are side safties attached to the trigger..correct me if I'm wrong..the 3 pos M-70 type safety is an add on for sure.

I would say your gun is a mark-X that has been dressed up. Probably a nicer gun than an original of the same make and model however. A good tweaking job does wonders for a somewhat less than desirable rifle. you may have a good deal there. My guess without seeing it would be that you have a $1000.00 rifle.

Longtime lurker popping up...

Zastava has several types of rifle safeties shown on their site. Regardless, the Whitworth's usually have the prettiest furniture, of all the versions imported over the years.

Zastava

If anyone's interested, after the collapse of Charles Daly, one of the latest importers is K-Var, better know for AK's, bland stock, though.

Yugo's

Cheers!

I for one would very much like to see the stock as well as the rest.

Several of us, including me, bought LH 9.3x62 Zastavas in that group order by K-VAR last year. The prices were modest but we knew that they might be rough and, sure enough, the buyers' opinions of the stocks were mixed.

I have not even seen mine yet, since it is being held for me in the US. but I suspect that tinkering will be appropriate.

Incidentally, calibers ordered by K-VAR included .375 H&H and .458 Win Mag. I am told that Zastava can vary the fit and finish depending on what was ordered, so the Whitworths are likely more polished.
