Recently got a double in 470 NE. It regulates at 50 meters with holes 1cm apart using Federal 500g solids. Looking to load up some light? cast loads using a RCBS mold dropping 500 gr bullets. I have had good luck with 5744 powder in my 416 taylor, 375H&H, and 458 win mag but I have seen no loading data on the 470 NE. Has anyone used the 400 gr Speer .475 pistol bullets in the 470?

Thanks - Cherokee Ed

Based on results with my 450 No2 and 400gr bullets try this load.
500gr. lead bullet, 50gr of IMR4198. with enough dacron,[polyester pillow stuffing], to be compressed by the bullet. I use 15 grains [weighed], of poly.
Another load that shot good in a buddys 470 Chapuis was a 350 Hawk bullet [ www.hawkbullets.com ] with 53gr. of IMR4198 and 13gr. of dacron filler.
I would start with 50gr of IMR4198 and work up.
Load 4 rounds with each powder combination and shot 1 right, 1 left, 1 right, 1 left at a distance you are comfortable shooting, then retest the best loads at,25, 50, and 100 yards.

What 470 did you get, give us the details. [Big Grin]

It is a Merkel. Seems to shoot very well but I have only shot it 5 times thus far. Still waiting for dies and brass to arrive. I want to save the factory ammo that came with it.

Thanks 475/480 for the offer. I think I will have my hands full for the time being working up loads with jacketed bullets and the one 500 g mold I have coming from Buffalo Arms.

NEI is apparently open for business again. Try looking up their 476-410 bullet. Might do nicely. I have an NEI mold from just before Walt Melander died and it is a great mold.

475/480,

Mountainmolds has a nice site.

Which of their designs works best in your double? What diameter do you size to? Do you have a preference in bullet lubes?

Any comments about loading for the 470 NE?

(I've cast and used a bunch of pistol bullets over the years, but not much rifle stuff.)

Thanks,

Cast bullets in rifles can involve a lot of
witchcraft, though usually the larger the bore the smaller the witch. [Big Grin]
I have had pretty good results with lead bullets in Nitro for Black style loads with cast bullets in my 450 No2, however I think I would try some lighter weight jacketed bullets also.
A double rifle is the perfect essence of a true hunting rifle. It is a shame to only use it for DG in Africa. I have had more fun hunting in North America with my doubles than you can shake a stick at. [Big Grin]
With my doubles I have taken deer, pigs, turkey, bear, caribou, coyote, beaver, squirrel, rabbit, skunk, armadillo, bobcat, turtles, carp, alligator gar, and probably something I have forgot.
I get more satisfaction hunting with a double rifle than any other rifle. It is the true hunters rifle. The more you use one the better you will understand it, and the more you will see its perfection. [Wink]

N E 450 No 2,

I suspected that it would be a lot of fun.

One of the many reasons that I've ask so many questions from so many view points on the thing.

Am REALLY looking forward to this one!

Thanks All,
