I am hoping to use the wisdom and experience of the forum to decide on whether to re-bore a .375 Ruger to .416 Ruger or not. What does this kind of work usually cost and do the results equal the quality of a new barrel? Thanks in advance! -+-+- "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." - The Dalai Lama

The first consideration for reboring to a larger caliber is whether or not one has sufficient barrel diameter to rebore to the larger bore size and still retain enough wall thickness for safety precations.

You can do that and I think it costs about $200 these days however I would just opt to rebarrel the gun using the existing sights... I have a .416 Ruger (see it on the African section)and its a great round IMO..You can use the loading data for the .416 Rem., start with the low loads and work up..My rifle maxed out at the same max load as the .416 Rem with RL-15 powder and IMR-4350, but I will just use RL-15 and a near max load for 2400 FPS plus a tad, and thats in my 20" barrel.. Re-boring is great but...you are taking a lot of weight from the barrel. Generally the quality of the barrel determines the quality of the re-bore. There will be a lot more recoil than just the caliber increase and the gun will balance differently (maybe better, maybe not. Ruger uses very heavy-walled barrels for caliber, IMO). Neither are deal-killers. Just considerations. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

........My 375 Ruger Alaskan had enough thickness to be rebored , but it was pretty nice and light as it was ... A 400 gr bullet @ 2400 fps would be REAL lively when you pull the trigger ...... EP , thanks for posting the links I have a barrel I want to have rebored ...... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Ruger will probably use the same barrel profile for the 416 anyway, so you'll wind up at the same place anyway, and so you might as well re-bore it. Cheaper than than the 500 bucks (+) for a new barrel, chamber, re-blue, etc., etc. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. That's what I was thinking. In general, are re-bored barrels as accurate as new barrels? -+-+- "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." - The Dalai Lama

My 470 Mbogo is a re-bored Ruger RSM 416 Rigby. It was done before I bought the rifle (from 470 Mbogo, who posts here) by Cliff LaBounty. It shoots real well, and has killed a half dozen cape buff. Canuck

Contact Jim Dubell at www.deltagunshop.com. He alos runs Clearwater Reboring at his shop. Jim took over re-boring from Cliff LaBounty several years ago and has his machinery and hired two of Cliff's guys. I have had over 20 barrels re-bored and all shot as good or better than prior to re-boring. "Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.
