I finally got the chance to shoot my Ruger #1 450/.400 today with fellow AR member Tom Kessel, and we were both impressed. We each shot a 100-yard group, and both groups were 3/4" center-to-center. I was using a 4X Leupold scope, and the load was 82 grains of IMR-4831 & Woodleigh bullets. I was very pleased; also, as I predicted, the rifle is a little light for caliber, and kicked like hell. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Frank How much does she weigh scope and all. You may find that off hand recoil is not that bad. Congratulations, sounds like your 400 is a good shooter. For deer and pigs you might get some 300gr Hawk bullets with the .025jkt. Load them with the same powder charge as the 400grainers. Velocity should be @2330fps and they kill deer and pigs like the Hammer of Thor. They hit the same place as the full power 400's in my 450/400 3 1/4" double. They also have less recoil. I'm guessing, scope & all, that the rifle weighs 8 1/2 lbs. I think I'll try your load, so I can get more practice using a single shot for hunting. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Congratulations on your new 450/400. If you load Hawk's 400 grainers, start with a lower powder charge. The Hawk's are dead soft and seal the barrel better than other bullets. I shoot the 300 grain hawks in my 450/400 and 300/400 grainer in my 404 Jeffery. Awesome pig/deer rounds! I think the Hornady bullets are .410 caliber. Rusty We Band of Brothers!
