What do you guys think about the remington 798 its now available in Stainless with a laminated stock. The .375 H&H comes with iron sights and a 24" barrel . I thought this might be a nice rifle teamed up with the Hogue over molded stock with the full length aluminum bedded block.

I'd like to see one. Might be the basis for a nice rifle. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Tanoose, Have you seen one in the stores yet? I was wondering if they've been shipped. George

I saw an ad for them here in Norway, close to 1500 dollar for the Remington/Zastava, i think its a bit to much for them.

Thanks, Tanoose. I'm hoping these are not 'vaporware', like their Baikal-built double rifles. George

Will the 2 or 3 pos bolt shroud safteys fit on the new Rem 798s? I think that would be a nice option to have. I emailed Remington about it. Maybe if enough people wrote letters or emailed asking for it...?

They had no prices in the 2007 catalog but i asked remington and the price for the 375 H&H is $970 which is the same as the blued model So depending on where you shop i think they were selling from $700-$850. I'll let you guys know what my local shop is selling them for but he wont open till friday. My guy charges just $25 .00 above cost on almost all his firearms and scopes. I buy from Del-Sports Inc in Margeretsville NY.

If Remington could produce those rifles themselves instead of letting Zastava (the cheapest gunmaker in Europe)make them, it could be an interresting gun. Frankly I would far more prefer a Ruger/Kimber (or Dakota if I could afford one). ------------------------------------- Hmmm, coffee is good. Too bad that without it my head goes bananas. I should quit but hmmm, coffee is good! -------------------------------------

Since Remington has just been sold almost anything can happen .The new owners own Bushmaster but also a number of non forearms companies .

"Should be available to us by April 1"?....and here I didn't think that Rem had much of a sense of humor....it seems even they enjoy April Fools Day.

David, they were sold her as the Whitworth, then the Charles Daly for years, and the quality was there. Rich DRSS

I've started several threads over the last year or so asking about the 798 in either 375H&H or 458WM. IIRC, the only one(s) ever seen were for display at various shows. I'm not so sure that a single one was ever made available for purchase much less a stainless version. I had hoped the 798 would be a good foundation for a solid lighter weight 375H&H Mauser, but those who saw the display rifles indicated they were not worthy of purchase for anything. GVA

from some of the reports i have read they seam to be a well made and accurate rifle . And as far as the 798 blued model. It has been out for some time now and not hard at all to get.

Check this : http://www.zastava-arms.co.yu/english/civilni.htm Zastava is ok, but is far lower in quality than its bigger brother CZ Brno. This is the same as Cooper tyres do, just call and they will brand your name on it, but it will still be a cheap tyre no matter what you call it. ------------------------------------- Hmmm, coffee is good. Too bad that without it my head goes bananas. I should quit but hmmm, coffee is good! -------------------------------------

Zastava is not related to CZ and BRNO is out of business.

I know, but did you not see my point? In the European marked, they are low end producers when it comes to the money. Both gives a lot of bang for the buck, and they do both make Mauser copys. For me who has owned a Brno in 308 Win and a CZ 452 i .22Lr and fingered all over all kinds of guns it is a big finish difference between a CZ and a Zastava. The CZ is in my view a really good gun, the Zastava/Remington 798 is NOT...Just because Remington should be good enough to make their own guns. I like US made things of all kinds, and US products that are made in China/Checkia/Korea or wherever is NOT the same for me. ------------------------------------- Hmmm, coffee is good. Too bad that without it my head goes bananas. I should quit but hmmm, coffee is good! -------------------------------------
