Mods since last time 5/8x1/2 recoil lug silver soldered to the barrel 3 pos safety pach f990 recoil pad Wiser extra long extractor converted to cock on open. This morning, I finished the wood inletting, mounted the recoil lug, and inletted for the leg. It now HOLDS 4 down and 1 up... holy crap, batman, a 5 shot jeffery!!! Weighs 9# 14oz before bedding compound (steelbed) here's the question.... Should I drill n tap the recoil lug, and make it a third screw down, like a cz? jeffe

Looking at the pictures Robgunbuilder posted on second recoil lugs it doesn't appear that putting a screw through the stock to hold down the second lug needs to be done. I'd think that it might be another point to start a stock cracking unless you used an aluminum pillar through the stock to support the screw.

Hi Jeffe, You shouldn't need a screw through the stock. It only shares the recoil load in the backward direction so as long as it is bedded tight on the back of the lug it will be doing it's job. Remember the CZ scew fits into a lug that is in a slide and can move back and forth and your is a fixed lug. Take care, Dave

I have gotten in the habit of putting a screw in the barrel lug to hold it down. But I do a few other things. I use a 10x32 screw with a 3/8" head that I make up with a .025" slot. The bushing in the stock I make from nickel bronze, and it is 1/2" in diameter. The bushing is a slide fit into the stock and you glue it in place. Then sand and finish the stock. The checkering pattern is worked around it in a point pattern. The screw is timed so it is just snug, and not tight. I try to put the lug so the screw is 4 inches from the face of the reciever. Then nitre blue all the screw heads that show, and color caseharden the steel grip cap and swivel bases. Boy does this brighten up the rifle. Jim Wisner

I have owned 3 M70 458s and countless M70 375s and accuracy was always superior when either a screw was put into the barrel lug OR a small section of the bottom of the lug was glued to the stock. It seems to make no real difference if the second lug is only an inch or so from the action like in Mark V Weatherby. Personally I far prefer a plate around the recoil the lug that extends down into the forend. For some actions that is easier to do if the recoil lug is narrowed a bit. Mike
