...American Rifleman magazine? I had a chance to look it over this past weekend. It had a semi-interesting article on how to build your own safari rifle for under $700. The feller that built it used a Charles Daly action to build a 458 Win Mag he plans to chase ele and buff with. Who'd of thought it'd be as easy as he describes? Great, that's probably the mag that went missing on me. The only thing turned up in the post was the wrapper. JAL.

Pretty interesting article. It did a good job of explaining the fundamentals of real world fitting of a barrel and setting headspace. However, the $700 didn't include the cost of the action wrench, the barrel vice and the reamer he bought for a one shot project. If you are doing it yourself and are only doing one rifle, it is much easier to send the action to one of the barrel people in Shotgun News who does good work (such as IT&D for Douglas barrels) and let them do it for you. You can then finish the rifle and actually have quite a bit less in it.
