Does anyone have a favorite load for the 50-70 with 650gr bullets@950fps? I am looking to start loading tomorrow for a new toy.

Thanks

Matthew

I'm not sure why you chose a 650 grain bullet since that is awfully heavy for the 50-70 Govt. 950fps is a going to be a stretch with anything but black powder and you may not make it. You didn't say what action the rifle was built on but getting that velocity with smokeless is going to be a real test of strength.

Matthew, I would think a case full of drop-tubed Swiss FFg, lightly compressed, would get you there, or a bit faster. I have a .50-70 that needs to be stocked and blued, and hope to shoot a bullet of similar weight in it.
Good luck!
Bill

I am shooting it on an Encore and 950 is just hopeful. I have no experience at all loading with black powder. I have hand loaded for years and own and shoot blackpowder muzzleloaders, but never loaded cartridges this way. I do have a few pounds of FF Goex, maybe I will give it a go.
