I just recieved an order for 378-460 Weatherby cylinderical to continue to work on my 550 wildcat. Cost is 1.75 per case and with one pass through the sizing die cases will be ready to load and fire. That is a simple way to get a large caliber round without the brass problems. Now to work on the barrel. RNS

Brass overall lenght is 2.905" for the shortest and 2.919" for the longest. Case dia above the belt is .578" and is a true up to the neck. These cases will only has to be sized about .004" a side and they are ready to load. I have some pic and will try to post them tomarrow if work will leave me alone for 5 minutes. I as well have some cash for the tooling. RNS

RNS-Thanks for info. You want to let cases fireform to standard Wea base size of .582.
IE, make chamber .584 at base and resize die
.578.Can't figure why a lot of brass is made smaller than what the size is supposed to be.
we are getting closer.Find a couple-three more to
help with tooling 550 barrels. For all you readers,
Wells will do tooling for nothing(800-1000 dollar item), if they get a dozen orders for 550 barrels, and RNS and I
will only have to cover a 200 buck barrel reamer.
Time to make history all you gun nuts, and help develope the 550 Magnum!!!Just for cost of barrel, 460 brass, and dies. Can share chamber reamers.Ed.

I may be interested, I am looking for an oversized project gun. I will read the old posts to get up to speed on the caliber and let you know. Are bullets a custom deal only?

We plan on so far, having John at Bridger Bullets
make the 55 cal bullets. He will have production going in a couple months. And his prices are
real great also.RNS mentioned in other
thread about another bullet maker with 55 cal.
He can repost it here if I can't find it.Ed.

Well guys I appear to be having some computer problems at this time. So I am going to have to do some maintenance on this thing.

To make a long story short the .550 mag was designed to be a cost effective big bore with as little cost as possible. Most of the big bore c ases are pretty expensive for the average joe which is why I chose the 460 weatherby case and I wanted it in cylinderical form. most of the big mag actions that will feed a weatherby or rigby will work for this. I next looked at the 600 ok and the 470 capstick and the 550 mag is right in the middle. I contacted wells sport store and for 350.00 they will install a barrel with intergal recoil lug and do the feeding of the actions.

From there the plan was to pick up a cz550 in 416 rigby i have seen them for 650.00 and 350 for the barrel and I now have a shooting monster. Big bore die are all about the same cost. Cases right now are $1.75 apeace which is not bad. I am working on getting them headstamped for .550 mag.

So that leaves the bullets which I am planning to get form bridger bullets, Hawk bullets make .550 bullets. There are a couple more companies that may work. GS custom said they would make them also but I will hold off till they get there shipments on time. The .550 is also 28 guage and I am going to contact someone about a mold for cast bullets.

unless I have forgotten something actions, barrels, brass, and bullets are available for a very large semi affordable big bore.

Ed has posted some approx velocities for this thing and everything seems to be comming together. RNS
