My 500 Jeffrey has languised as a long unfinished project. Other interests have cropped up over the years, and the time to finish the metal work, fabricate a magazine and turn a walnut blank into a stock just isn't there.

The other day I was doing some googling and came across bowers Vers50 suppressor.

Which got the wheels turning. With my Jeffreys 1-15 twist and long throat, all I'd need to do is have the barrel threaded and I'd have one heck of a lead chucker. I'm thinking a 750 gr bullet mold would be just about right. I can get motivated to plop the barreled action into a plastic stock and have a baby bmg.

Your idea contains some merit. Bowers suppressors are pretty much junk. I had one on an M11 Cobray made Ingram in 9mm. That was about what it was suited for.

Lead bullets and suppressors are a bad combination. Either the 535-grain, or 600 grain bullets would work fine.

I. Be sure the rifling twist well stabilizes the bullets out of the gate. Any fishtailing and your suppressor will get et like a cut puppy in a river full of piranha.

2. Get a proper 50 BMG suppressor, Jet (titanium), Surefire (Quick Detach), AAC, Gem Tech and AWC all make suitable units.

You will have to pay for a one time tax stamp for $200.00.

Felt recoil will decrease by 70%. Still wear your foam plugs and muffs.

You will be amazed at how far those 600 grain blivets will fly - accurately.

May we see more pictures of your rifle and its action?

Just throat your 500 Jeffery for 750gr Amax's. Dont shoot lead bullets through a suppressor. Ditto on Bowers cans being unsuitable. I've had great luck with Gemetech cans myself. Just make damn sure you have someone thread the barrel who actually can do it concentric to the bore and understands thread classes. I have a 500a2 set up like you describe and it is very accurate and hearing safe. -Rob

I am afraid that your idea may not work if you want to use BMG bullets at subsonic velocities. I have an SSK barrel chambered for the .50-70 cartridge with a 1:10" twist. It stabilizes the long bullets just fine at 1000 fps out to over 500 meters, but if a 1:15" twist worked I assume that SSK would have used it. Shorter, lighter cast bullets might work fine, but then they are usually not suitable for suppressor use.

No,

This (possible) project is not intended to produce subsonic velocities. The case would have to be cut back quite a bit for that endeavor.

The suppressor is for hearing protection, to decrease felt recoil by spreading the recoil impulse over time and transferring energy to the suppressor chambers in the form of heat, and to diffuse the noise signature so that it is tolerable to other shooters, and difficult for any (large) varmints downrange to determine the sound source's location.
