As a new member I have learned so much in the past month. This truly is the best hunting forum on the web thanks to the many fine individuals participating. I may treat my self to a Bigbore X-mas gift and would like some suggestions on a proper break-in procedure. I am leaning towards a 375 H&H. Doug

Give it a thorough cleaning when you get it, then just shoot it and clean it.

some say clean it every shot for the first 10 or 20 shots, then clean it every x shots for the next x shots... here'what Pac-Nor suggests Pac Nor Barrel Break In What I can 110% suggest is that you get some Wipe-Out bore cleaner... Wow - this stuff WORKS... I've used everything, Shooter's Choice, Sweets, JB's, Butch's... you name it - i've tried it and none of them work as well as Wipe-Out. Spray the wipe out in the barrel, and it only takes 2-patches to clean the bore down to bare metal - no brushes! I'd start by cleaning it with the wipe-out and continue cleaning it after shooting it per Pac-Nor's instructions. Hope Santa is good to you!

I agreee with Ray its a waste of time, i did it on a couple guns. I went the whole way useing all the products, time, blood, sweat, tears etc. At the end of the day the gun shot the same as it did out of the box. Now I dont even bother to clean the bore just the action when it gets a little sticky and it shoots the same. Fiddiling with guns aint my thing hunting is. For the benchrest guys its a different story.

I have arrived at the opinnion that "break in" is not applicable to big bores, it just doesn't make any difference....and if it does its miniscule and not important in a big bore caliber. I clean my very well indeed before I shoot the first bullet through it and thats about it.... 338 and below, I clean throughly then I shoot a series of 5 shots and clean inbetween..then another series and clean every 5 shots etc. Maybe it works.

I am with Jackfish too, I always remember what a mechanic friend told me about engine break in, which sums up to,"drive it how you're going to drive it.". in the end though I will do what my gunsmith tells me, but if I remember right he says about the same thing as Jackfish. :-) Red
