Has anyone used these 480 gr woodleigh's on game ??

It states that it has a reccomended impact velocity of 1800-2200 fps, which it would be close to doing if started from a .458 Lott at 2350 fps (which I think would be acheivable). I know it is meant for the nitro rounds but I think that this would be a good bullet for all round use from the .458 lott as it may expand a little better on smaller game than what the Lott was intended for (such as pigs etc.) what do others think ??

A friend of mine used them in his 450 rigby rimless for buffalo and, Leopard, Zebra etc.

The said that the solids were almost reuseable and the softs peformed well in the original verocity that Rigby set. I have seen a fwew that were collected and they look like nice mushrooms [Smile]

Johan,

the .480 woodleigh in the Lott may give the Magical 2400 fps in the lott and also recoil would be reduced maybe slightly ??

The .450 Rigby would neally be able to throw them at 2700 fps I would think. It is mearly the .460 Weatherby less the belt as I undertsand it.

This bullet mayalso be good for .458 win mag users.

I think that it would be just fine in the same velocity as rigby gave the 450 rimless specification, around 730-740 m/s. You will get low pressures and nice uummphh [Smile]

It will do , and if it doesn't call in a tank batallion [Big Grin] [Eek!]

I would hesitate as that particular Woodleigh bullet was specifically designed for double rifles in 475 No.2, 475 N.E., 465 N.E., 450-31/4, 450 No.2, 500-450x31/4....

All of these calibers churned up 2000 to a max of 2200 FPS....At 2400 to 2700 you might have a bullet integrity problem, in fact I am sure you would, I just don't know at which velocity it would take place, but my guess is 2400 would be absolute max for that bullet and I personally would not shoot it past 2200 FPS...

The problem with such issues as this is that the bullet may work fine on 10 animals and then blow up on the shoulder of a cape buffalo or Lion with shot number 11, with Murphy at work 24 hours a day....

I had better clearify that the above menitoned rounds all shoot the 480 gr. woodleigh but they are not the same bore diameters...

Ray,

I was thinking of a bullet for animals other than Cape Buff and the like.

I thought this bullet might be better suited and expand a little nbetter for stuff like Sambar Deer and feral Horses. I doubt that the .458 Lott could push a 480 gr bullet to 2700 fps, my guess is 2400 fps tops, then at 100 yards it would probably be doing 2200 thereabouts and still be in it's reccomended impact velocity ofr 1800-2200fps.
