I don't know about these but Charles Daly's have good reps for some products and not so good for others(1911 and Hi power copies). I am no expert but I think that the stock design of the CZ helps tremedously. My 7 mag (mod. 700) smacks me about the same as the .375H&H. FWIW mine cost $706 OTD

Yeah it is a step up from Mosins but a lot of fun! Now that I think about it the .375 is not much harder kicking than an M38, no fireball though. Do you hang out at Tuco's?

Hi Zeke,
For something as moderate as a .375, the only things I think you would need would be steelglass bedding, a recoil pad and the scope. Now, admittedly, I have a particular crank about safeties and would insist on replacing that CZ oddity with a good Wisner 3-pos M70 style. That's because I seem (due to my work schedule) to hunt more often in Africa than anywhere else and in Africa there're a lot of people around when you're out in the bush. I don't feel confident trying to keep track of Jim, the PH, 2-3 trackers, a possible game scout and maybe a dog handler. Under those circustances, I need a striker-block safety. For someone who hunts alone or with only one other person, that might not be such an issue. It is with me.

What about the Charles Daly/KBI rifles? I don't know much about them. They sure look good

These rifles have the crossbolts but no express sights.

Any purchase will be a few months down the road. I have to give up my milsurp addiction for a time and work all the OT I can. This is a big step up from $75 Mosin-Nagants.

Zeke,
I have to agree with you about need VS. want for big bores. I don't hunt with them but enjoy shooting them at the range. I picked up a Ruger #1, .375H&H a few years ago. It's a hoot to shoot. Also much more fun and a lot cheaper with cast bullets.

Zeke I just bought one of these. You will like it. The recoil pad on the rifle works very well for me. I have no plans to change it. I will get the rifle bedded though. I think that I will also have the bolt handle replaced. Let us know what you do.

Hello All

Been a long time since I have been to these pages.

While I was at Sportsman's Warehouse today drooling over guns I can't afford, I had a chance to take a good long look at the new CZ 550 American Safari. Very nice gun. I think I'll try to get one.

So as I try to figure out how to divert money from the budget to put into the secret slush fund, I went around the 'net to the usual sites and found several posts about large Bore/DGR rifles and what kind of mods the owners do to them. Everything from modifcations of the recoil lug, installing crossbolts (the CZ550 doesn't have them on this model) and heavy duty steel composite bedding and other stuff I haven't heard of.

So what is the real story on what kind of mods can or should be done to a boomer such as a 375 H&H? The only mods I can think of doing are a recoil pad and a stout scope. Anything else to consider?

FWIW. I have absolutely no real use for a big piece of field artillery like this one. I want one. That is reason enough to stop buying milsurps for awhile and get a nice new gun for a change.

I lurk at Tuco's. Post occasionally.

Spend most of my time at Parallax Bill's and SurvivorsSKS pages.

I am using the milsurps to learn and improve my rudimentary stock refinishing and gunsmithing skills. The milsurps are a inexpensive way to enjoy shooting without breaking the bank. However, I am always trying to save a buck and get the lowest price.
This time I want to get a nice wooden stocked, blued steel gun in a good old-fashioned classic caliber. An old-school hunting rifle my Grandfather might recognize from his hunting days of years ago. I don't mind waiting a few months to acheive this goal.

While you may not need a 375 for deer don't hesitate to use it in that capacity. Mine is my favorite deer rifle now. Get one and use it. The opinions on the necessary modifications of the Chezeds are varied. Some say get a new stock, scope, barrel, trigger, safety, bedding, recoil lug, slick up and engrave the action. Some say all you need to do is put bullets in it. How much interest/want/ money do you have to put into it? Jesst whadever yeew waownt. Good hunting. "D"
