It's been over before on this board. The rumor is some shipped without stainless underneath and that the newer ones are stainless with the coating over them. Of course they now have on their website some bare stainless. I wouldn't know how to tell the difference without destructive testing. Sorry, I guess that wasn't any help.

`Uh, absolutely no clue. But, I stopped in Dan's Pawn here on 98 today and he had a trio of identical No. 1's in seemingly unfired condition in 7mm RemMag., 375 H&H, and 416 Rem. All stainless with grey laminated stocks and Nikon Monarch scopes. $899.00 each or $2400.00 for all three--prices very negotiable. I'm sure he'd deal on the 375 if you are interested.

I heard that the first 100 Alaskan's that went out were chromoly with matte black finish.

That is internet gossip. However, I would ask the lady at Ruger to look up the serial numbers of the first 100 Alaskan Hawkeye .375 Ruger rifles, and go for one significantly distant from those, if I wanted one with blackened stainless.

My very early African chromoly was numbered: 710-035XX

My later "gun metal gray" Alaskan was: 710-159XX

Best I can do, if that is any help.

I just grabbed the matte stainless finished one. At least it has been through the bluing tank to darken the color a little to "gun metal gray."

I would prefer the black-stainless too, and I would rather it had a 23" barrel like the African, instead of 20", if I had my druthers.

My black finished Alaskan is serial no. 710-080XX. I cannot tell if it is stainless or not under the coating.

Are you reading this Ruger spies? I second this idea! How about a 23 - 24 " stainless in 375 Ruger!
